Guest polypompholyx
Hello everyone, I recently took some pics of Utricularia aurea, a floating aquatic, which were from a locality in Pontian, West Malaysia. There used to be at least 1 locality in Singapore that I knew of, although that may have bee an accidental introduction from the aquarium trade. Unfortunately, the local population perished last year due to a severe rain shortage, and shortly following re-filling of its habitat, alien invasive species were recklessly introduced. Hope you all will enjoy these pics of U.aurea in cultivation! U.aurea in habitat - a roadside ditch actually U.aurea flower Apical segment showing the nice red colouration that these plants get when well-grown Closeup of bladders More bladders! U.aurea fruit - as they approach maturity, the seeds can actually be seen through the fruit. Fruit splitting Seeds being dispersed in water: the fruit consists of a pointed "cap" (the structure in the middle) and also a gelatinous pulp where the large seeds are stuck on to. Some seeds still remain in the "cap", with a 1cc insulin syringe tip as a size gauge. Finally, the seeds themselves, showing the visible embryo in the middle. And last of all, a bunch of U.aurea seedlings germinating in a test tube. I originally harvested 1 fruit from my Utric tub, placed it in a test tube of water and forgot about it for a month or 2. Seems like they germinate pretty well in the dark! I hope these pics were of interest to aquatic Utric enthusiasts, please forgive my lack of technical terms! (Perhaps someone in the know could kindly enlighten me regarding the names of the various fruit parts?) Cheers, Hong Yee
