frangelo
My record time from seed to flower was about 23 months for a S.x catesbaei grown under lights to begin with, so I believe you! Well I sown my own hybrids (about 80-90 different crosses, the first year) and I grew all of them near my greenhouse...on a table in a sunny part of the garden....among all of them three of the strongest plants have flowered in their second spring....and much more are preparing to flower this year(their third year)!! Did your 'Tarnok' produce its seeds this year? Yes, it is the first year it flowerede....but I fear themy seed are not so stocky as yours...its ovary chamber was more deformated .... If Phil Sheridan has successfully selfed that flower, then the structure is more normal than the S. 'Tarnok' flower. Stigmata are present in S. 'Tarnok' but there is no sign of male organs. totally agree :!: It would be interesting to cross S. 'Tarnok' with this; Even if I have this purpurea I think that I will not produce crosses for a few year...too much work!! If only I think that I have to seed other 86 new crosses :bang:
Howard Snocken
As requested, an update. I am happy to announce that S. 'Tarnok' IS fertile as a seed parent. The seed was stratified in the fridge and the pots set under lights on January 16th to provide an early start. I now have three pots of healthy seedlings. Here is a photo taken today... ....and the next update will be in several years time to show, presumably, some normal flowers

Danny...
Very interseting reading this... I've got a "Tarnok" flower on the way, it's still shut tight now and the bulb is getting bigger by the day. I guess in a week or two it might open and i'm not sure yet of with which other plant to pollinate... Should i use an all green plant(like a normal Flava?), or a red Flava.. Or maybe an Areolata? Any suggestions form you experts?, cause i'd like to give it a go as well! Cheers, Danny... P.S. I am rather limited in choice, my collection does not meet with those of Mike or Aiden for example. Just so you know
Howard Snocken
Hi Danny, I think it's worth considering that the 'Tarnok' type flower may well only be expressed from the second hybrid generation onwards ( if at all ) so think long term! I'm aiming for a compact, colourful plant that keeps its pitchers well over winter and up to flowering time. Spring dreaming... :toothy4:
Pyro
Obviously we do not yet know whether the trait is dominant or recessive so we will have to wait and see. However I suspect the possibility of semi-dominance. My reason for this is that I have recently seen a non-'Tarnok' leuco (collected from a site in a different state) that could only be best described as semi-sepaloid. The flower does not have loads of tepals but instead looks to have a true doubling of the flower parts. The bloom also has male parts and was producing pollen so perhaps in a few years we wil see what a crossing with this plant can produce... The most compact plant i have, and colors up nicely as well. Well see what happens!

Not a Number
I hate dig up an old thread but enough time has passed that some of the plants should have flowered by now. Â Any follow up?
