louisduddridge
i have just purchased a Nepenthes called Rebecca Soper. i was wondering if how i am keeping it is ok as my last nepenthes died from keeping it in the wrong conditions. it is in a bathroom on the windowsill of a north facing wall. i keep the soil damp but not water logged. i also mist it with water occasionally. should i be only using rainwater or is tap water okay? some of the pitchers dont appear to have much liquid in them. Should i fill them up at all? Any help would be appriciated. Louis.

Guest Aidan
Calcium and Magnesium salts are the major problem. Having said that, Nepenthes are more tolerant of hard water than most carnivorous plants. Rainwater is the best option, but you may use tap water. However, it will likely mean that the plant will require repotting sooner that it otherwise would owing to mineral build-up. I doubt the plant will get enough light in its current position, but wait for the expert Nepenthes growers to chime in.

JELLE
and how about filling the empty pitchers? don't do that, let it how it is
hen
Only very occasionally do the pitchers need filling up, when they have been spilled is really the only time it's neccessary. I'm guessing that you picked yours up at hampton court on the weekend from Matthew Soper?? (I got one too, most of the pitchers were empty so i have filled a couple back up a very small amount) Some people say that nepenthes will tolerate tapwater, personally i don't think it does them any good, rainwater or sometimes riverwater is all i use for neps (that goes for misting and filling pitchers too ;)) Give it a go on that windowsill, the pitchers will shrivel and drop soon while the plant acclimatises to its new environment. In a month or two it'll have some new ones opening. If you think that after a few months it looks a bit weak, take it somewhere slightly brighter. good luck ;)

louisduddridge
btw if anyone has any info or tips that may be useful to me as a beginner to growing nepenthes they would be really handy, especially if it is specific to Nepenthes 'Rebecca' Soper. And thanks to everyone for the advice so far.
