Mememe
okay, so they're not dead yet. I hust re-potted them and most of the traps closed! Will they recover? I am VERY new to this :newbie: sorry for the new thread.. I also took a leaf cutting. What should I do with is. I put it in the soil (only the white end) I hope the little guys survive!!! :bang:
Alexis
The traps wil reopen in a day or so. What did you repot them into? Sphagnum moss peat I hope! Lay your leaf cutting on the soil and sprinkle some peat over the top. Then be very very patient and you should see some growth in a few weeks. Mememe
I could only get hold of peat? Is that okay?
Alexis
Irish moss peat most of them say on. Don't use sedge peat.
Mememe
hmmmm... i am worried now. It's from B&Q, called gardening peat.. It doesn't say sedge or irish moss on it. How long will they last in sedge peat?
Alexis
Not very long Examine the bag - it needs to say either Irish, sphagnum or moss.
Mememe
hmm... I don't think it'd right. Does John Innes 1 work? It has little nutrients, sand, peat moss and loam?
Guest Sheila
No, you really must use Sphagnum moss peat, loam is not good for vfts. I assume as you bought the peat in B&Q you are in the UK. It would be helpful to have a proper location in your profile as it makes a difference to the answers you get when seeking advice. You may have better luck finding moss peat in Asda or a garden centre. The peat needs to be totally nutrient free or your plants will suffer. hen
those are perfect ingredients, but one problem: the loam will kill your plants! otherwise, a very good idea ;) there was a post about B&Q peat a while back, do a search and you're sure to find it. do you have any perlite or silversand? if you mix that with the peat at about 2:3 parts sand:peat and it will make it much better drained and prevent rotting. Mememe
I have sand and perlite (the mix I put in was perlite and peat 50:50) So will that work?, It's about what you said, or do I need sand.... I went through about 3 garden centres... petersham nurseries etc. (that's quite small though) Thanks for all your help.
Jonathan
It will grow perfectly well without sand, but the peat really is vital. Moss peat is nutrientpoor and acidic. Sedge peat is alkaline and will kill your flytrap as Alexis and Sheila have already said. If in any doubt, repot it making sure you wash the roots well in rainwater first. Mememe
I can't seem to find any proper peat, does anyone know any shops... It survived the night, But what mix should I put it in if I can't find moss peat.. LIke I said, I have looked............. :?
suzy
I've been using the B&Q garden peat for the last 8 years, and had no problems :)
Mememe
REALLY!!!! On VFT's??? Do you use anything else (perlite etc)!!!!! TELL ME MORE!!!
suzy
I use it on all my plants - VFT's, Sarracenia, Pinguiculas, Drosera, Utricularias :) I don't use anything else with the VFT's, Drosera or Sarracenia. Utricularias and nepenthes get treated to some sphagnum moss, and my ping mix also comprises of perlite and a smidge of JI Suzy
