  1. Black Sarracenia have been in the cross hairs of breeders for a long time now, but few have succeeded in creating such a beast. Granted, there are a few Sarracenia out there that do turn black with an "artificial suntan" aka when greenhouse grown, but has anyone made a plant that turns black from head to toe without the need of a greenhouse? It's definitely not easy to make such a plant, the reason being that most of the black clones/genetics in cultivation are difficult to coax that color out of them. They really need the exact right conditions to darken up! Sure, they will get black
  2. Recently picked up a couple of unlabelled Sarracenia from Wyevale garden centre and was wondering if anyone is a dab-hand at identifying species I believe the first is S. leucophylla, and that the second is some hybrid of S. purpurea?
  3. Have been reading up recently on colchicine/oryzalin and their use in plant breeding (specifically in Drosera hybrids) to produce fertile (otherwise infertile) hybrids by chromosome doubling. Where (if at all) can these chemicals be acquired safely and legally? I'm aware oryzalin is a component in some herbicides but am unable to source any from the UK. Thanks, Rob.
  4. S. 'Ellie Wang' is one of the most unbelievable plants I've ever seen, photos taken 5/5/17:
  5. My sister in law told me that she hates the smell of lilies, and I can completely understand why. The smell is sweet, but it has a powerful chemical background smell that sometimes overpowers the desirable characteristics. I still like it, but some people just hate it! I've never grown any of the "odd" or non-commercial variants of trumpet lilies until now, and what I learned is they don't all smell the same! Lilium x Goldsmith has a fragrance that isn't over-powering, and the best I can describe it is ripe sweet bananas with a hint of citrus in the background without any chemical underto
  6. Took some pics to try to get the color right - still not there but closer than others I've taken. It is very difficult for me to capture the subtle light blue ..... U. nephrophylla x U. reniformis - 1st of my seedlings to flower (& nowhere near the largest) The mother .... The father ... For comparison, here's a previously-posted pic of U. nephrophylla x U. nelumbifolia

    A Christmas orchid ^^

Hello my dear, I hope you´ve all had nice Christmas days and gifts. To my very surprise one of my orchids sent out flower buds for Christmas and the first one opened just in time! I´ve been at my parents over the holidays and when I´ve come back yesterday the second flower has been open. I´ve taken the digital cam of my stepfather and made some snapshots. This is a Restrepia orchid and according to the information the donator has given me it could be a Restrepia falkenbergii or a hybrid with R. falkenbergii as one ancestor. Comparisons with other R. falkenbergii flower pictures on the web
