  1. Hi, I'm very new to carnivorous plants, and I wanted to know how I can control the growth of moss. Especially as its has grown over and killed most of my dwarf sundews.
  2. Hi, my absolute favourite plants have to be D. Binata. However I have a few questions. 1: just now I was feeding my Venus fly traps (I keep and breed a few lizards so have tiny crickets lying around!) and I wondered what I could feed to my D binatas? I've heard about crushed up fish food. Is this suitable? 2: in my D. Binata 'multifida' (an awesome looking plant!!), it has very long tenticley bits (not to sure what the proper name for the sticky bits is), have withered. Is this due to too much sun light, or lack of water? 3: again with my D. B. Multifida the plant stems are very long and often fold over and get caught on things such my cacti and the curtains etc. Is this what they do naturally? Is there something I need to do to help them stay up? Is it okay to tie cotton around them to keep them up? Many thanks, Ben
  3. I'm afraid we do not know each other, and I don't think you did buy anything from me on eBay as the last thing I sold was a trombone about two years ago, not a plant.
  4. Thanks, one is definately a spatulata. The others look different, but I don't know what an alicae looks like to know whether it's a small one or a small capensis
  5. I've my plant for about two months now and there is a film of scum forming on the surface of the water in the saucers. I guess it's minerals that are leaving the peat but will it be harmful to the plants? Should I rinse the sides of the pots and clean the saucers and fill them up again? Thanks, Ben

    Help with ID

Hi, I recently bought a drosera that had some tiny little stow aways. They were not the same species and I'm not sure what they are. How do you tell the difference between rotundifolia, and spatulata? Do all drosera have red tentacles? (the bits that produce the sticky dew)

    Pygmy drosera

I got a pot of drosera carbaraup and wondered if I pick off just one of the rosettes and replant it will it grow okay and start to spread or are they too sensitive to be moved in this way?
  8. Yep springtals are great for keeping stuff clean, you can buy loads from www.dartfrog.co.uk, I would also imagine that dwarf tropical woodlice would be good too for larger plants and would be great in terrariums. I use both of these species in my vivariums with my skinks, geckos and dragons. No mold at all, no dead leave either.
  9. Hi, just wondered how you induce dormancy in plants. Surely if they need to, they will do it themselves? Every cp I have had in the past has always died back in the winter, or is this not dormancy? Can you only do it if they are in a terrarium?
  10. Hi, I'm very new to carniverous ants and I want to know what a gemmae is. Where do you find them and what do you do with them, when do they appear? Thanks, Ben
  11. I wonder if anyone on here has bought one of these recently? More specifically from Triffid nurseries. I did and I've discovered there are at least two more sundews in the pot with it. They are very small and definately not a binata. The leave form a rosette. If anyone has any ideas, that would be great. Unfortunately, I can't put pics on here due to the fact I'm using my iPhone and my laptop won't connect to the Internet :-(

    Help

I've just received a bare rooted VFT and planted it. Most of the traps seem to have closed up now due to what I put towards my heavy-handedness. Will I have killed the plant by doing this? Do I need to remove the leaves that have closed up? How do I avoid this in the future? Many thanks, Ben
  13. Hi, just wondering about the moss growing on your bogs. Do you have to remove any at all to promote new growth of plants? Or do they grow through the moss without any problems? Many thanks, Ben
  14. I'm afraid it didn't have a label, neither did the sarracenia
  15. Well I've just picked up some moss peat and sand, mixed to around 5 peat: 2 perlite: 1: sand. I also picked up a pitcher and what I think is a butterwort (large flat leaves?) and potted those up to stay in the garden and see what happens!! I've filled up four pots in anticipation of the arrival my plants from Triffid!
  16. Well I'm not sure how much I'm contributing to that! I've only ordered five and I'm struggling to find peat to pot them when they arrive!! I need to know what to do with the drosera ive ordered over the winter period. How much do I water them. Im getting two binatas and a Pygmy one. Do I just keep the soil moist or let it dry out or what?!
  17. Excellent, thanks!!
  18. Erm, okay, but I asked about watering them. I'm not sure I ever even mentioned they would be outside. Thanks
  19. D. Binata, and a Pygmy D. 'carbarup'
  20. Hi, I know I'm a bit early as spring has just arrived, but I'm new to CPs and want to know what I need to do as regards watering during winter. With my cacti I completely stop water altogether from sept/oct to march/April. Do I do the same for VFTs? Or do I need to keep the soil damp?

With my cacti I completely stop water altogether from sept/oct to march/April. Do I do the same for drosera? Or do I need to keep the soil damp? Is it the same or different for pygmies?
  22. If it is the same thing then I didn't know that! Otherwise I wouldn't have asked!! I can't exacty remember the plants!! I think I ordered a Pygmy drosera, two different forms of drosera binata, and two different forms of VFT. I'm considering getting rid of some cacti to make space for some more CPs but I just hope i have more success and can keep them alive!!
  23. Hi, I'm hoping to glean some info in a bid to keep my plants happy and healthy. I've kept various CPs before to varying degrees of success, but this time I have just bought five or so plants from Triffid Nurseries. Before they arrive I need to sort out the compost for them. Just one question, will normal peat be okay?, or does it absolutely need to me moss peat? Many thanks, Ben
