  1. A few of you may be planning to come to Japan especially in 2020. The Olympic&Paralympic games or the ICPS conference, I don't know much about both. Anyway, whatever your purpose, probably you have extra time to stay in Japan other than the main purpose.

I would post videos as many as I could. You might find tips of enjoying Japan. I would post 2 or 3 videos every few days or few weeks. Hopefully you may be able to find a couple of interesting stuff. I would choose videos mainly from Japanology series. All episodes are wholesome and informative. Although many of them have a sound problem.

Please don't ask me any question in this thread or PM. I am quite useless. I met a friend of mine from Germany, who is a famous pitcher plants taxonomist, in Tokyo in the spring of 2019. It was the first time I met him, who has been a good friend of mine since I joined the cp-listserv in 1994. I needed Google Maps. And when I tried to buy our tickets at the subway station, the ticket machine continued to ignore me with my wrong operation. A young woman offered to help us purchase our tickets. How embarrassing! I had lived in Tokyo for 26 years since I was born, and then have lived in the prefecture(s) next to Tokyo though!!! lol. How many decades since I left Tokyo? I won't mention.

     EDIT

Some videos are no longer watchable. So I have decided to replace them with alternatives (shorter ones).
You can watch some episodes of Japanology plus on demand (free). Please go to the NHK world, if you are interested in.

These pseudo Japanese songs were composed by two Belgian guys. Whether good or bad, I didn't know this album in 1971. People say "weird, ridiculous, crazy, bizarre, odd, strange, gibberish..." Probably it was an experimental project.

The screaming guy in the first track, I can catch the half of his talk. Musicians may be geniuses at language.

    01. Yamasuki

This song was played in an American movie that related to Fargo (movie).

    The related scenes:

Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter (I don't watch this movie.)

    Fargo (movie)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15uK_izuKKY

You can also watch/have watched the same location in Fargo TV series Season 1 Episode 4 & 6.

    07. Yama Yama

This song was played in the season 2 episode 3 of Fargo TV series.

    11, 02:

11 & 02 have been played as the theme songs on a popular cooking program(farmers' cuisines) with Japanese public broadcasting (NHK)「まんぷく農家メシ」.

And 11 was performed in YA-NE-SEN a Go Go (rotoscope animation).

  3. How to remove Nepenthes seed husk (testa) in the most elemental fashion way.

    Konnichiwa!

I have not yet obtained any USB camera for my microscope. I have been notorious for being clumsy since I was a child. In fact I have never met any person, who is clumsier than me. They used to say mumble such as "You have two left hands!" "Your fingers are all thumbs!". They call me all sorts of names under the sun. I have to admit, they, all people around me, are cleaver with their fingers.

The stereoscopic microscope of mine is not trinocular, but a binocular one. A mobile phone was attached to the left eyepiece(ocular lens). Consequently I was looking the objects through the right eyepiece with my left eye. Thus the operation was a clumsiest manual fashion of this clumsy guy. Therefore, the process can be done smarter and speedier by anyone, no matter how clumsy he/she is.

Until someone discloses much better method, please use it as reference, if you are interested in. But then again, the removing Nepenthes seed husk is not a point, the important thing is how to get better germination from old Nepenthes seeds. As I wrote, it is a primitive manner. I believe it is not the only alternative seeding method of preparing for getting seedlings from old Nepenthes seeds or moldy ones.

I took the photo on March 06 in 2018.

After I took the above photo, I sowed these seeds. It seems the old seedlings have the strength to push through their seed husk.

Though I don't understand the conditions for the appropriate storage of the Nepenthes seeds, it seems viability among Nepenthes seeds is a lot longer than what we may think and have/may read, as N_CloudySkies-san said on TF (page 4).

The membrane that I provisionally call the seed coat still wraps the actual seed, except the one end where the root will be emerging. It still seems to protect the seed.

I illustrate it by using the peanut though it is improper.

Could anyone explain the technical terms?

    That process is called scarification:

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarification_(botany)

It is done to help germination, in particular to seeds that have a hard coat or that are inhibited from germinating until it goes through an animal's digestive tract or suffers some physical damage. For that some seeds are quickly submerged in acid or polished to remove its protection.

I did it a few times with citrus seeds (removing the peel), but never seen it being done to carnivorous plant seeds before.

    Konnichiwa!

    Dear Whitefox-san,

Thank you very much! “scarification”!…. a bit scary…

Some growers remove Ibicella seed husk in my country.

Jan-san (Dr. Jan Schlauer), who has been a good friend of mine since I joined the cp-listserve in 1994, answered my question.

    ......

Regarding the seed coat, this is the commonly used term. The external form and the mechanical properties of the seed are defined by the outer layer that is called testa. Additionally the embryo is included in the inner (protective) layer that is called tegmen and is a thin membranous peel in Nepenthes. Other seeds have endosperm that additionally surrounds the embryo, but in Nepenthes the endosperm is not well developed or lacking whatsoever.

    ......

  10. Konnichiwa!

    While waiting for the update04,

I took all photos on March 28 in 2018.

I have been confused about the opinion that is the cold storage damages Nepenthes seeds.

The other experiences that contradict this opinion, though much shorter period than N. eymae (storage for 5 years in refrigerator).

I sowed N. aff. truncata seeds in a plastic container in August 2016, though they(plants) still have been neglected in the plastic container. I stored the remainder of the seeds into the refrigerator, with no silica gel. I sowed them in vitro on March 6 in 2017 (> 6 months old). I transplanted them once. Please see attached photos.

    About storage,

    My thought for the moment,

1: the seeds should be high quality in the first place.

    2: cold storage is necessary.

3: keep or control the seed moisture content (IMPORTANT)

4: inhibit propagation of bacteria and fungus

5: something I have no idea

  12. While waiting for the update02,

I am not sure it is an appropriate thing species being categorized as Lowlanders, Intermediate or Highlanders, so far as the seed viability. But, among Lowlanders, the appearance of N. northiana seed is significantly different from N. ampullaria. We probably should consider to separate N. northiana from the amp/raff/bical group. What do you think of it?

I am trying to grow N. northiana from a few sourses. I feel N. northiana seed viability is a bit longer than I expected.

    40744996752_b610e57f09_o.jpg

Another N. northiana seeds I obtained in April, 2016. I sowed them in the plastic container immediately. They started germinating on May 02 in 2016. I sowed the remainder of them in vitro on April 10 in 2017. I had stored the seeds in the refrigerator, no silica gel. I did not remove the seed husk in this case. They started germinating on June 10 in 2017. Please see attached photos, you can see the seed husks.

Thank you very much for the reply! I must say the seeds/seedlings are definitely Nepenthes. I recommend you to edit your reply before I quote your reply.
O.K. I will post the update.

  17. Konnichiwa!

First of all, I am not a Nepenthes enthusiast, but I like Nepenthes. I am quite unfamiliar with Nepenthes. In fact, I have been hardly growing Nepenthes in greenhouse. I remember the disappointed look (facial expression) of the great German Nepenthes & Heliamphora specialist, who is a worldwide distributer, when he saw a dying tiny Nepenthes (only one I had in my greenhouse at that time) in my Byblis greenhouse (see the far bottom in the page 1 of the thread: http://icps.proboards.com/thread/2348/scented-byblis?page=1 ) after the ICPS international conference in 2002.
    Back to the subject,

My German friend (not the above-mentioned specialist, but he is also a specialist) kindly sent Nepenthes eymae seeds to me in 2013.  I sowed the seeds in vitro, they germinated very well. Recently when I was tidying up the refrigerator, I found the remaining of the seeds without silica gel. Just curiosity, I sowed the seeds on February 9 in 2018. The seed was 5 years old. I noticed its germination a few days ago. I took the photos on March 2 in 2018.
I have often heard the viability of Nepenthes seed is quite short. It might be the fact when it came to the Lowlanders?
    What is your experience?

Kind regards from the Far East

  18. I'm not an anime fan, so I have not watched this movie, but I know this song. I have sometimes listened to this song since first hearing the original in 1968.

I'm not sure if it was a coincidence or an intentional selection. The younger brother of the lyricist (Hachiro Sato) died in the same prefecture in 1945.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6hEjB6pt-E

Here are the trailers with this song.

    for the U.K. members

    for the German members

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Xm0rU7YVtI

    for the French members

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVjk5MR_0OM

If you are an anime fan, it might worth watching.

According to the reviews and the director's statement,

    1) This is not a war movie, but Suzu's day by day life (story?).

    2) It is not nearly as depressing as "Grave of the Fireflies". Someone wrote "So Grave of the Fireflies vol.2? My feels aren't ready."

I know very well the two movies that I referred to often cause endless barren argument. If you want to, please go away and start making an argument at an appropriate place, because the tittle of this thread is "What are you listening to right now?"

Personally, living in the Far East and considering the recent situation, I plead for resolution of "nobody of both sides chooses the worst option (Oppenheimer's deadly toy)".

    One more song,

Again I'm not an anime fan, so I never watched, and will never watch the anime he is showing. But I think his translation is the best one. I guess it could be achieved by his background.

This is a most ironic military song.

Someone wrote: “Such a cheerfull song untill you translate the bloody lyrics, j........”

At another site: “The happiest song about dieing in the snow i've ever heard?”

In fact, this song was modified as the original was sissie, and then both were banned during WW2. At the very end of the lyrics in the modified version, the subject was replaced the military with the soldier (lyricist) himself.

In my opinion, this song (at least the lyrics) is an antiwar song.

The guy in this video is singing the original. I know some Westerners (including anime fans with innocent feelings) like this song. I wonder if they really understand the meaning of this song. I suspect they are singing the modified version in the anime he is showing.
