  1. I still don't know what I can do this year. But I was inspired by this thread (https://www.terraforums.com/forums/threads/primitive-carnivory-analyzed.142107/) and wondered if I could do anything. I didn't want to use the seeds that I plan to use for mass production of seeds in the future, so I wondered if there was something I could save from last year's failure.

In some pots, I had devised a way to prevent the seeds that fall from the capsules that stick out of the pot from falling into the water of the tray.

I used a stereomicroscope to collect promising seeds from many dead KSV debris and abortive grains.

The seeds are so dirty that I don't know if they can be introduced into sterile conditions using PPM, but I wanted to see if they would germinate.

I soaked the seeds in 500ppm GA3 (gibberellic acid) solution for 24hrs. Then I sowed the seeds on the night of March 12th. The photos were taken on the night of March 15th. It is the state of the third day after sowing.

When I see the seeds of KSV, it reminds me of a rock climber's tool. Probably an evolution to keep it from falling through crack in the sandstone.

  2. It may be a solution??
When the server doesn't accept my edits or posts, I stay logged in and open a new tab to revisit the CPUK forum.
The server seems to smoothly accept my posts or edits.

  3. Dear linuxman-san,

    Konnichiwa!

"This comment can no longer be edited. It may have been moved or deleted, or too much time may have passed since it was posted for it to be edited."

Some time ago, this display appeared twice in a row. How would you handle this case?

Kind regards from the Far East

  4. The reason the international authority does not accept my "cultivar" registration is because I am aiming for registration to the Government of Japan first.
If the Government of Japan approves my variety registration after passing a strict examination, the Government of Japan will allow me an exclusive sale for a certain period of time. The international authority does not allow this. Therefore, if I succeed in registering with the Japanese government, I automatically lose the right to use "cultivar"(This word).

    edit:

I'm sorry if it seems to be misleading. I have never applied for variety registration to international authorities. Maybe it won't happen in the future, too.

I once had a registered variety in the Japanese government, but I canceled the registration because my friend of the co-applicant passed away last year. The registration system in Japan has a very strict examination, so it was "a test our skill" and a registration for honor.

  5. First of all, the word "breeding" I use here means "creating new artificial varieties".

It does not mean pollinating to obtain hybrid clones. Even when pollinating two pure species to create F1 Hybrid clones, the task of pollination and creating hybrid clones is only a tiny fragment / small portion of an entire breeding program. If you are confused by reading this, please do not think further. Real plant breeders (or anyone who knows what "breeding" is) can understand.

The international plant naming rules of the International Society for Horticultural Science do not allow the use of “cultivar” for artificial varieties I am aiming to create.

There are personal plant breeders that I admire in Japan. Whilst my current situation is nowhere near the same league as theirs, I hope to climb or rise to the heights of the people I admire in the future. They are not like the giant company Monsanto. They are not seed companies neither. I don't think these companies care about the international authority.

Let's take the person related to this forum as an example. He is in heaven but I think he will allow me to do that. The league in which he existed is far above the league I'm aiming for. Almost half a century ago, I visited a nursery run by him and his son for the first time. After that, I visited their nursery frequently until I became a nursery man myself. If I remember correctly, he was already using a cane at that time. You will find his name attached after Dionaea in an enormous database. Maybe it also follows the Sarracenia cultivar names. Before World War II, he imported Dionaea and Sarracenia by sea, spread Dionaea in Japan, and bred Sarracenia (breeding cultivars). I often stayed in their nursery from before lunch time until dark in the evening. I followed his son, like the baby follows its mother about all day long, and watched Dionaea ‘Suzuki’ for hours. For some reason, they treated me very well. They were more famous as plant breeders for other plants such as orchids than CPs. Their names are still remembered among many plant lovers. Of course, even if my life triples, I won't be able to reach / rise to the league they were in. They cultivated a lot of precious plants and tried to prevent them from becoming extinct from Japan. They were not the type of nursery that mass-produced a limited number of varieties. They were good people for breeding. His son and his wife lived in a decent house. But he himself and his wife did not. Have you ever seen the movie "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"? Johnny Depp & Freddie Highmore version. Recall the house where the boy Charlie Bucket and his family lived. The house where Charlie Bucket lived is reduced to 1/20 (or less), the style is Japanese, and the condition is the same. They created a lot of cultivars by breeding, but when they sold small quantities, they got stuck in mass production of his cultivars by other nurseries. Other nurseries that were good at mass production got the cultivars he created as soon as possible and mass-produces those cultivars. He was always cornered, due to the mass production of "the cultivars he made" by other nurseries. Of course, even if he profited enough from the cultivars he created, it is doubtful that he used it to improve his own quality of life.

His son was very pleased that I became a farmer as a tomato grower rather than a nursery man like them. He didn't want me to do that because their type of nursery was in such a difficult situation. As some of the members on this forum know, I immediately started doing more than just tomato production.

I used to think that the American dream was the term used when talking about Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk. However, the original meaning of the American dream is "to earn income to support the family and to have a house to live in.". Just because the plant breeders I admire try to realize the American dream in the true original meaning, I cannot accept that the international authority treats them insultingly. Simply put, it's a strong anger. It's not a crime, but in my opinion it's "deadly / cardinal sin". I think that many people who belong to the international authority get their living expenses from public funds and research funds from public funds. Some of them may not understand how public funds are generated. Why didn't they use the new coined word for word that definition could change at a conference of the international authority?

In my opinion the international authority is having a great negative impact on the horticultural world.

I feel deprived of the word I have cherished for half a century; “cultivar”. There is a huge hole in my heart. The meaning of word might vary from person to person / each his own. It might vary from country to country. They use cold logic to force a resented agreement. I find it very insulting.

I am not going to discuss here with international authority or those who are in tune with it. I have no intelligence or language ability to compete with their intellect and the logic they use. It's like resisting the logic that International Olympic Committee president used for the Japanese. "Be skilled at debate" is not considered as a virtue for many Japanese in my generation.

The international authority says they are "not political".

Political remarks are prohibited in this forum and no details will be given.

But if the international authority is unilaterally in favor of certain countries, it is the same as the IOC has a very political side. It's ironic.

The international authority has given the 101st quibbles to those who state 100 quibbles.

"We do not have to respect the varieties that " the international authority "does not respect. Our country does not have to comply with the contracts made. "

In my opinion the international authority is having a great negative impact on the horticultural world, even here.

I would like to know if the plant breeders I admire exist outside of Japan. If so, I would love to hear your opinions and thoughts. Of course, you wouldn't write in an open forum like this because you will hesitate to write in the open forum unlike me. Please send me a personal message.

Maybe it helps me fill a huge hole with something and repair it. It could be for me like “Bran mixed with pins and needles for the sake of a Scarecrow, Heart-shaped thing made of silk stuffed with sawdust for the sake of a Tin Woodman, Liquid in a square green bottle for the sake of a Lion”. Suffering from a sense of loss, those three believed they were released from it by Oz. But in reality, they had it from the beginning.  Brain (Scarecrow), heart (Tin Woodman), courage (Lion).

In my case it's a real loss.

  6. There is a very interesting thread.

Primitive carnivory analyzed | TerraForums Venus Flytrap, Nepenthes, Drosera and more talk

By some chance, you might see persons like me doing low-level discussions, but it's a thread worth visiting once in a while. At least one of the contributors is good at keeping the thread decent. I secretly believe that his precautionary posts have prevented me from being attacked in the past ,due to my English skills, ignorance of Western culture, my personality, etc.. The thread has a high level of discussion, it is not my place to say something, but I got an invitation. So, I posted a few things. You can see how I shot "Fantasy Flora Time-Lapse 3 The KSV pooling effect 1" at a low cost.

Finally, the individuals in these photos are clones from some inbredlines which I have been trying to fix the traits. Please compare them with your plants when you have the opportunity to grow KSV and see if there is any difference.

Why did the seeds not ripen?

When I took this photo, I was convinced that I had succeeded in mass-producing seeds last year and reported it to Allen-san's daughter. How embarrassing.

I hurt my lower back and left calf in the spring. I had to work a lot to produce tomatoes, but I barely walked for over a month. Please take a look at this site.

Scented Byblis! | International Carnivorous Plant Society (proboards.com)

    https://icps.proboards.com/thread/2348/scented-byblis?page=1

Tomatoes are planted on both sides of my wife with Byblis in her hands, B. aff. filifolia Giant from different locations, Pago region. Due to a slight delay in transplanting, seed production failed due to low temperatures. My mind is still 18 years old, but I have to admit that my brain and body are weakening.

I don't know when I can work on seed production next time because I already have other plans. You may be supplied first by the Europeans mentioned above. Even if I succeed, I'm not a worldwide distributor so don't ask me directly. I will consider measures so that you guys can receive supply from proper retailers. If you can't buy from the decent retailer because of economic disparities between nations, I would consider alternatives.

  9. Part 7b/9

The conditions under which the pooling effect begins in my cultivation environment:

In the year of discovery, I realized that a terrible hot temperature was required for this phenomenon to occur violently. After reaffirming this phenomenon in the summer of 2014, I tried to shoot a video. I installed Timelapse software on my laptop PC and started shooting. The larva on the KSV the next day had no pooling effect. I wondered if my observations so far were dreams. I noticed something important. I continued to try shooting for the second time. Last time, I turned on the lights during the night all the time for shooting, but in the second shooting, I turned off the night lights and turned on the lights only when shooting a couple of times. I shot at night only on the first day.

    Please watch the video again.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMiMDXXaAvw

The KSV was in a small plastic container and there was a slide glass between the cheap USB camera and the KSV. The temperature was set to about 30 degrees C to prevent the slide glass from fogging. This is a fairly low temperature for observing the pooling effect.

The pooling effect occurred in this second shooting. Please watch from 14:02:53 to 19:04:23 on July 2, 2014. Something seems to be happening dramatically in the larva, rapidly the turbidity inside the larva hangs down and becomes transparent.

Night may also be involved in the digestive activity of other carnivorous plants.

As already mentioned, it seems that research on KSV cultivation and insectivory is being conducted in Europe.

I don't know if they are studying the pooling effect, but I hope it will be revealed the pooling effect by the skilled grower / great researchers above or other researchers, preferably Australian researchers.

The red-stained larva has a more intense pooling effect. The unstained one just swelled. This is not the effect of the stain. The stained larva is in direct contact with the lamina. The unstained larva only sits on the glandular hairs and does not touch the lamina.

I noticed this phenomenon in 2013. When I first saw it, I thought it was a fall of condensation (dewfall).

I noticed it at the end of summer, so further observations were carried over to the following year.

The temperature from sowing to transplanting to the pot is not necessarily terribly hot, but it needs to be terribly hot to grow crazy and look as beautiful as its own habitat, under my cultivation. In my greenhouse, this environment is from late June to mid-September.

According to Allen-san, hot air breeze of 50 degrees C may blow in its habitat.

The green ring with a diameter of 15 cm is not directly related to cultivation. Please watch the video again. The capsules are prevented from burrowing into the ground (the medium) by tying them with a thread so that the seeds are not soiled.

The difference in thread colors indicate the individual pollen parent or inbred lines, etc.

    About pollinators

Moths and very small hoverfly-like insects that can hover in my area, both can hover, they appear to be able to mediate KSV pollination. This is in contrast to the lack of Byblis pollinators in this area. The lack of a Byblis pollinator is an advantage for me.

Please see Fantasy Flora time lapse 2 again. Although it is a time lapse series, the movement of the pistil in this video is the actual speed.

    Fantasy Flora Time-Lapse 2 - YouTube

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVhoGnNRKGI

In the photo, in some cases, the moth may appear  to perch on a plant. The moth is hovering by flapping its wings at high speed. This moth appears in my area from late summer to autumn. The photos were taken in 2011.

The little hoverfly runs away when I get close to it for shooting, so I haven't succeeded in shooting it yet.

    Regarding the botanical name,

When I posted to the forums,

Two names were valid as the family to which KSV belongs in the Western Australia Flora database, such as "Scrophulariaceae" and "Linderniaceae". When I asked Allen-san about this point, he said that each taxonomist had different judgment.

I can't enjoy talking to people who take on / pretend taxonomists. That feeling is getting stronger year by year.

I don't want to get involved in their discussions and disputes about classification and insectivory (carnivory). Thanks to Allen -san, I have been able to grow a lot of Byblis, so I may have something to say about ridiculous opinions, but otherwise I don't want to be involved in discussions or disputes / arguing.

In addition to having difficulty maintaining motivation to continue posting, I felt the danger of being involved in discussions and disputes as a real taxonomist had replied to my postings on a certain forum, and mentioned the latest literature.

In this case, he is a real taxonomist / botanist / researcher, he is not a "know- it-all" person.

I have only seen two Lindernia species (Australian). Both look like carnivorous plants, but strangely they don't look very similar. I don't understand the definitions of this genus and this family.

I'm in awe of carnivorous plants, but I see and treat carnivorous plants as Ornamental plants. I report what I saw. You guys are free to discuss them, but I am not going to be involved in any discussions or disputes/arguing about them.

  14. Part 3/9

The original seeds of KSV I grow were taken under the license that Allen-san got from the government. Government permission is required to collect any materials from the wild in Australia (at least Western Australia).

My guess is that this law eliminates the inconvenience of Australian researchers suffering from the lack of type specimens in the country. For example, the potential type Byblis filifolia was found in the Biota project, but Byblis filifolia type specimen does not exist in Australia, and I suspect that researchers may suffer inconvenience.

This type specimen was collected so long ago that it can't be helped that it doesn't exist in Australia, but nowadays there is a nation called Australia and there are many researchers there. I find it quite inconvenient to have no type specimens in Australia when Australian researchers study the plants of their country. I think the government is trying to avoid such a situation. This is just my speculation. It does not reflect the opinions of the Australian Government.

I believe there are countless "undescribed species / subspecies" in Australia.

If I go to Australia and randomly collect materials and bring them back to Japan, they may contain "undescribed species / subspecies". If I do something, it can be a huge loss for Australia. At the very least, I should get permission from the Australian Government. Of course, I don't think the Australian Government will give me permission.

This time I will post about my failure. I've made countless mistakes in growing plants for many decades, but it's embarrassing to talk about them and I'm not used to confessing. However, I believe my failure will be useful to those who observe and propagate KSV in the future. I was commissioned by Allen-san to mass produce KSV seeds in 2020. I promised to do it in 2021. As a result, it failed, but I think its process of failure will be helpful to those who are interested in KSV. I don't think I'll be able to produce seeds for KSV for a while due to other plans, but it seems that KSV is being cultivated and studied in Europe so you may get seeds from them.

  17. Very interesting Cephalotus germination process

I mentioned this post on the following site.

    https://www.cpukforum.com/forum/index.php?/topic/37940-cephalotus-seed-germination/

Fortunately, I was able to take a picture and would like to share it with you.

Dr. Hasebe, who noticed that I was removing the seed coats of some plant species, taught me an interesting literature on the germination of Cephalotus. This article is on a pay site and cannot be accessed.

    https://www.publish.csiro.au/BT/BT19053

I wanted to share a photo with people like me who couldn't read this document.

I have sown Cephalotus many times, but I was unaware of this interesting germination process as I am only half awake at all times.

I mentioned Utricularia species in a forum as an exception to plants those roots do not first emerge from seeds.

    https://www.terraforums.com/forums/threads/how-old-is-too-old.142820/

I have to add Cephalotus to it.
