  1. Oh, ok. The seeds still haven't come out of the eucalyptus, so I don't know what's going on. And I don't really have that much room right now, so I haven't planed the olives. As for the strawberries, three of them died, but the other three are growing really fast. Only one flower this year, a whilea go, but loads of leaves. I'm trying to convince on of the runners (I think they're called) to root in one of the empty places. New question, do you need to grow peppers in a greenhouse? A little while ago, I planted some seeds from various coloured peppers in a yoghurt pot with soil in. They are in the 'greenhouse' (but that doesn't mean much - the door is very loose and usually off). They have sprouted, and are each 2/3 centimetres tall. What do I do now?

    VFT Flowers

So, update. The flower stalks in the peat withered and died. So I chucked them. I looked today and saw one of the flowers had opened to seed. Happy. There were 31. But when I was just about to plant them, the wind blew most of them away. Sad. So I think I've got anywhere between 4-7 that I managed to find and plant. I truly hope they germinate!
  3. Oh, so that's how you get the seed! I just found today a seed pod open on my VFT! I'll get the seeds now then.

    Ok, thanks, I'll wait then.
  5. Thanks, I did wonder. Yeah, the newer pitchers all seem bigger than the ones it put up at this time last year.
  6. Um, last year I kept it indoors. This year I've put it a soft-plastic greenhouse thing outdoors, but the door is very loose. The original door broke so I have had to replace it with a plastic sheet and stick on velcro, but the velcro's coming off now so I had to sellotape the velcro on. I have left it outside the greenhouse during the day time a couple of times when it was dryer, as I've read on here that sarracenia can grow outside. But I'm trying not to shock it, so I'm introducing it gradually to the outdoors, and haven't left it outside in rain or for a night yet. So it's been basically in an unheated place/outside this year so far. Am I doing anything wrong?

    My VFT

Oh, recently my flower stalk flowered, and I self pollinated them using a toothpick. Now the flower petals have fallen off all of them, so I can only now hope for seeds. Do I have to wait until the whole flower stalk itself is black before checking for seeds?
  8. Ah, ok. I'll re-upload the photos.
  9. I got my sarra from Hamton Court Garden Show last year. The label says it is sarracenia x exornata (s.alata x s.purpurea ssp venosa). All last year it grew pitchers with lids that had wavy edges, like this (sorry about the links - the imaging isn't working for me): http://www.plantarara.com/carnivoren_galer...0venosa%201.JPG (not my photo). And curled over the top of the pitcher a bit. But the new pitchers it's growing this year don't have the same lids. I'm still waiting for them to colours up, they are fairly recent. But their lids don't have wavy edges, and the most recent one, it's lid goes straight up: (my photo). Is this normal - changes is the shape of pitchers when the plant is this big? Also, there is this on one of the pitchers. I haven't seen it on any of the others, but I just wondered what it was.
  10. Well, here's the orangey spikes: It looks healthy enough, but I just wanted to check. And sorry about the fuzziness (macro didn't go close enough) but the yellow/white stuff you see in the soil is the fungus/mould stuff.

Ok. I've left it, and am just waiting, keeping it topped up with rainwater.
  12. Oh, those are nice colours!

Can't you just drop it in the pitcher?
  14. I asked on here a while ago about an ID for a cactus I got from the 99p store. It's been growing fine, but now I've noticed a yellowish mould? growing on one side on thetop of the soil. Also, the top middle spikes on the main body are orange. Any help?
  15. Um, ok. What soil do cacti take? Can I use normal "Miracle Grow" compost with perlite?
  16. Cooked cactus, hmm.. i can't tell how damp the soil is - it's covered by stones. And I don't want to overwater- there are no drainage holes. Repot?

Um, the cut up flower stalk has been in peat/perlite in the greenhouse since 20th April and no change except the flower stalks themselves have begun to turn black.
  18. It was my first dormancy, although I think that this sarra is a few years old. Just today I cut off most of the old pitchers as there are loads of new ones coming through and the old ones were dying anyway. Been outside of the greenhouse for quite a bit of today - if the weather stays like this, I might keep it out more. {Thumbnails aside fomr the last two as imageshack was playing up} Eariler this year (before prune): Just today (after prune): Also, first pitcher to open (seems so young and innocent): Some of you may recall I let my VFT flower this year. I have pitcures! I've taken some pollen from the stigma and put it on the stamen (right word?) when the stamen was fluffy (which I guessed meant it was viable, as it didn't come up fluffy). Now I just hope it produces seed.

OK, thanks for your help. I hope it works.
  20. Well, the strawberries are in Miracle Grow compost right now anyway, so that's ok. Three of them are doing well, the other three not so (one accidently got it's leaves knocked off, one has minor leaf burn, and the other is just small). But they seems to be alive. Can you just plant the euclyptus pods straight into the ground, without waiting for the seeds to come out, because they've been in a tissue for a few weeks now, and still no seed?
  21. Ok, thanks. What's the best way to get a cactus to flower? The little tag this one came with says not to water them over winter (begin watering in March).

Ok, good. Just waiting now. How long until I can expect any growth? (weeks or months?)
  23. Just came back from the Eden Project yesterday, saw many wonderful plants, and got a small cactus in the shop. It looked cute. Don't know what it is though - was hoping you people could identify it?

So I just cut up the shorter of the two flower stalks, put it in peat/perlite (50/50 mix), took a little live sphagnum from the sarra's pot (don't know where to buy it, so hoping it will take) and put it in the greenhouse (which is now nailed to the shed to stop it falling over). For water (rainwater), I soaked the soil, and put it in the bottom of a cleaned out milk carton with about an inch of water (same as I do with the VFT). Is that all I need to do?
