Should I Bring In My Vft?

A summer house that gets light but also provides shelter sounds ideal to me........... Heather
  3. Thought it might have been a bit early for dormancy......my P. Grandiflora is going dormant but nothing else so far. I have about 4 intermedia's and all look the same, is it typical for plants that are the same to go dormant at the same time or do they normally differ a bit?? 2 X P. Grandiflora's have gone dormant at the same time. Should I treat it as dormancy rather than dying then?? Still new to the whole dormancy thing. I'll be glad next year when I will know what to look for! Heather

Should I Bring In My Vft?

Azhtabak - just to give an explanation, its not a problem to leave your vft's outside (our mild winters shouldnt cause any problems), although you can also bring it inside aswell but only if you have somewhere without any central heating so that it keeps cool enough for dormancy. Heather
  5. Hi all I've been growing several intermedia plants along with my other sundews but they look like they're about to kick the bucket, all the ends are going black. They are quite new plants but are definitely past the settling in period, also the middle of the plants still look fresh and green but the rest looks like its dying. I figured they would be happy with the usual conditions - pretty wet with plenty of sunlight. Does anyone know if they prefer different conditions? Any ideas of what I can try to do to nurse them back to health?? Any chance this could be dormancy setting in?? Regards Heather

Should I Bring In My Vft?

Hi Jimothy I thought that it was fine for plants to be inside over winter/dormancy as long as they were in a unheated area - I was planning on leaving mine in my unheated conservatory! Regards Heather
  7. I wouldnt be suprised if that were the case either Trev!! Thanks for your response............ Heather
  8. Hmm, my Big Mouths and Finetooth X Red all looks like Bob's Finetooth X Red. There does look to be a bit of difference in Bob's Finetooth X Red and Big Mouth..........maybe I should re-name them all Finetooth X Red??? Its a shame the whole naming situation seems so out of control, as much as I love vft's it is a bit annoying to end up with plants that are the same but with different names. Not really the sellers fault as they are only selling the plants as they receive them in the first place, hopefully people will stop naming them before they've been registered properly. Unfortunately I dont think the problems will be resolved any time soon though :-( Thanks for the replies everyone. If anyone else has any pictures of both clones I would be interested to see them. Heather
  9. Hi all I have a Big Mouth and Finetooth X Red and I cant see any difference between them, just wondering if anyone else has noticed this or whether one of my plants is mis-labelled?? I have another Big Mouth from a different supplier and thats also the same so thinking the Finetooth X Red may be mis-labelled unless they are the same plant thats been given different names at one point?? Any thoughts anyone?? Heather
  10. Thanks for the advice Derek, I might try the fungicide then and hope it clears it up.............cant hurt can it!! I'll keep a watchful eye and see what happens. Thanks again! Heather
  11. Thanks for the reply Joel, just worried its something more serious than sun burn like a fungal or viral infection that might spread to other plants? The spots are just about the size of a pin head, it only seems to be on 2 leaves so far, the one most affected is also partly hidden under another leaf so I would have thought if it was due to sun burn then this would have been one of the least affected leaves as its more shaded. Is there anything else it could be or should i just put it down to sun burn and wait and see what happens?? Heather
  12. Hi all There seems to be some red spots on the leaves of my N. burgidgeae, is this something to be worried about?? If so, what should I do? Thanks Heather
  13. Many thanks for advice everyone, fingers crossed I manage to get them to root successfully Heather
  14. Thanks for the advice Andy and Aiden, think I'll try it in live sphagnum. Just one question...... Andy you say I need to pull the leaf off with some of the rhizome attached, if I pull the leaf off without this will it not work?? Thanks Heather
  15. Hi all, Im wanting to try some leaf cuttings from my cephalotus but not really sure how to go about it. Im hoping someone can advise thats had experience with this?? Thanks Heather

    Kew

Thanks for posting those pics Andy P - those neps looks great!! Any chances of some names to go with them so I know what I'm looking at?? Must admit I havent heard of this event before but looks really good Heather
  17. ????? I think this one belongs on the other thread about Jacquelinae Thanks again Wasted!! I'll give it a try then Heather
  18. Thanks Wasted, might follow your lead and try using pure sphagnum too! Does the sphag not just rot after a while though?? Its not a medium I've tried before. I've just bough some (was advised to just keep it in water?). Actually bought it for cuttings as I've had no luck using peat but I'm sure my neps will be appreciate it too! Heather

    Pruning

I've been wondering about this one too, how much and how far can you cut neps back?? Worried that when the time comes (my plants are arent that big yet), I'll end up cutting too much off and killing the plant!! Heather
  20. Thanks Wasted, they are pretty expensive to buy so wanted to make sure I could give it the right conditions first.............which I can so all is good!! Nice pic, very cute. Are you growing it in pure sphagnum??
  21. Can anyone give advice on the growing conditions for this nep please?? There doesnt seem to be a great deal of info on it when you try and 'goggle' it. Thanks Heather

    Slee-ping!

I have 2 P. grandiflora's and they are both still producing new leaves!! Heather
  23. Hmm, they generally arent that big though!! It definitely doesnt kill the plant, although does cause the trap to blacken and die (in my experience).
  24. Thanks for the detailed response Andreas and thanks to everyone else too!! I should be ok for conditions in Summer but might have a bit of trouble in the winter with temps for lowlanders, may struggle to keep it warm enough. Conservatory will probably drop to about 10 degrees and its unheated in winter. I could move them to a south facing window sill further indoors where its warmer, would the central heating be an issue? Or I could try heating the conservatory during the day but would have to let the temp drop at night for the highlanders. Maybe its best to give it a try, but not spent too much incase it all goes wrong..............
  25. Alexis, my vfts are growing in my conservatory at the moment. Everything they have caught themselves is fine and the traps open after a while as you would normally expect, I've only had problems mainly with the woodlice, it may very well be that other beetles etc are fine. Jimfoxy, yes Woodlice are not attracted to nectar or vft's and they do just stick to rotting wood.......however, earlier in the year before I realised my vfts would catch all the prey they needed themselves I did catch quite a lot of woodlice and feed them to my vft's. I stopped doing it when all the traps went black. The theory of repellant chemicals certainly sounds a good one, if anyone else can shed any light I'd be interested to know more. Maybe its just my plants but I wouldnt recommended feeding woodlice to vft's in my experience, Im sure since they arent naturally attracted to them though that most people havent had this problem. I dont neccessarily disagree that they all cant eat large hard shelled prey etc as some of you clearly dont have a problem with this (wish I didnt either), I've just found my vft's dont like woodlice and large waxworms didnt go down well either but only when fed to smaller traps. Anyway, its not really an issue for me anymore as I let them catch their own prey, was just trying to share the experience. Obviously many of you have different experiences to me though.
