No I think it is often exaggerated, too. Many fellow growers of mine are keeping their Nepenthes in very bright but only medium humid conditions and all plants grow fine and pitcher fine. The plants are very healthy and do not suffer from diseases and/or fungi as fast as more humid kept plants do. Only drawback is the lower lifetime of pichters, I think they dry out faster.
By the way: I keep all my Nepenthes in pure peat with a small topping of Sphagnum and I know several other growers who do the same. Even my N. macrophylla seedling grows well in there... :)
