  1. Hi All

I see that I contributed to the creation of discussion.

It was not my goal to create a dispute.

I’m cultivate Cephalotus plants for only several years and my experience in this group of plants is only just emerging.

I can at this moment completely agree with Mr. Dave Evans and pokie22.

    .

Effects of light intensity, humidity, substrate composition, etc. has a very large impact on the appearance of the plant.

I put a link to my topic and update, please check this :

    ....

As seen in the example of Big Boy, just change the light intensity to get a lot bigger sizes traps, and speed up the growing.

As many of the breeders - so many different growing conditions and many different plants.

Thank You Pokie's for confirm my beginner clue.

    Regards

    Marek

  2. Hi All again

Please , It was not my goal to create a dispute.

It is time to share with You some new pictures and experience.

Thank You for Pokie's to tell me the answers for my doubt, I think that is now right way in growth my cephalotus plants.

Here You are my all 4 plants : Dudley Watts goe_C002, Hummer Giant, Eden Black goe_C003 and the first one from the left Giant from Mr. Wistuba.

German Gian, Dudley Watts goe_C002, Hummer Giant, Eden Black goe_C003

    df3657ca45ee3e36ff24566edbc9dac3.jpg

To confirm also fact that some giant forms grow very slowly, here is the cephalotus Giant - origin A. Wistuba.

It has now a few years and growth was very slow. This year he show up some progress – new growing points emerge near the rim of the pots.

Also this plant will go to a shady position for next year.

Dudley Watts goe_C002 and HG together, same size small pots.

    8a12bdc5eb7b1c3013365a5396bc37eb.jpg

Dudley Watts goe_C002 – the bigger pitcher was form in the back of the pots, when the sun exposure was lowest.

    321053594ef26206a8a786e857809e6d.jpg

Now we have HG – looks the plant starving for bigger place to growth.

Also, You see the plants grows up. HG gets more green/Yellow color.

I heard a few times that Giant forms do not gets strong colors, sound correct.

    dd20a67ea9bc12ddecf34c42922ce4c4.jpg

Next proof that the bigger trap was form at the back of the pots.

    3921c463b73e6cf6227768a2d3e0b592.jpg

And here is something special for a  fan of the wide midrib – see the most hidden trap at the back of the pots.

Also most Cephalotus growers knows that if the plant grows in strong light getting strong, colored but smaller traps, not to much typical leafs - only pitchers.

Please see the picture now, all bigger traps growing at the back side of the plants was bigger, It was where a little more shade is appeared.

    58aca7ea379d7ddbac653289ca084d50.jpg

Now some update, my nice growing Eden Black goe_C003, looks like this plant clone my conditions and soon I will see nice clumps of darker traps.

    eeffe9cc00b88820720323bd7723aa50.jpg

Next to confirm – the bigger pitcher was growth in the back of the pot.

    ++b7fdda0c69e14aa04384a5e2fa519c1d.jpg

Eden Black goe_C003 in the nice color, I think that I have to many sphagnum in my soil to get fully dark color. Will check this next season.

To confirm this, I made also some experiment. Did You remember my Big Boy plant – please check the picture from first page.

This plant was repotted this spring. Then I was put it to the shade positions, no direct light.

There was also a place for newly arrived Julie Jones (I was get a very small plant), and few seedling of Julie Jones x ? from Stephen seeds from previous Years.

    029482da8a89cda1ead525b1e6777512.jpg

    Julie Jones goe_C006 x self ?

    f825d4edbd76d280c82543997732f157.jpg

Julie Jones goe_C006 – nice strength growth.

    272ae6c1f3fe59d084b458f7432f68bd.jpg

This is the stunning growth, as You see the Big Boy gets really big size. This plant grew a few years for me and the growth was very slow.

Please see also vertical lid  :ireful2:  :sarcastic_hand: .

    78beed5d868393150b0ea115bac1df1d.jpg

Last picture is the front exposure of lots of pitchers, back side of the pot – lots of non carnivorous leafs – shade conditions.

So conclusion is that to get “in my growing condition”  good size of the cephalotus, I need put them to the more shaded position.

My growing position is to harsh to get big size of the plant – but this will be fully confirmed in next autumn.

This spring I will repot all my Cephalotus, and half of divisions will be put to shady locations to check and compare the result.

I’m sure that the growth will show new evidence.

    Happy growing

  3. I will arrange some improvement. Will put the plant in the more shaded area. Growing in full sun is always good for nice colour but the traps growing smaller.

As for the origin, I have confirm that very mature mother plant developing 6cm traps.

So my only question was to check how it looks this in other collections - especially I want know how it is with the vertical lid.

It can be also full sun actions, and when the plant will grow in a little shade the humidity and temperature will be changing - developing bigger and more opened traps.

  4. Hi again

Just a little update and question.

Hummer Giant have now 3-4 years from cutting.

I need use now bigger pots, so it is time to divide.

I want ask Cephalotus growers about opinion - the plant have still small traps without characteristic vertical lid. Should I wait to fully maturity of the plant to get this look ? What is Your experience with this cultivar.

And here You are first seedling of Eden Black x self seeds that I was harvested in Autumn time.

They was germinatef after 4 months (with cold stratification).

  5. It is a few days later now and the flower stalk of Eden Black looks bigger and have more reddish color.

For most cephalotus I using dead sphagnum moss as top dressing. So it is usually not very wet, due loosely condition.

The picture was taken last days and we have now very hot temperatures here. I using tray watering method, and refilling the water when the tray is empty.

So that's why the soil looks a little dry, it was time when the water level was very low.

As for the white trap, it was not covered during growth. This is a natural anomaly, which appeared in the autumn.I'm thinking about taking a leaf pulling but it's still a very small plant and leaves, so I do not know if this succeed. I will try to do leaf pulling this week and will report later about the situation.

  7. It is working well like Dieter wrote, especially for larger forms due more supply of the food from stolon.

Tuber will sprout again the stolon or will develop new tuber (no new grow on the surface).

So do not dig again :-) just wait for new season, and pot the broken stolon.

  9. hmm, If I good remember I was receive them a few years ago from some lab - not from Europe.

I need check them more if other plants will be adult - I have them a few but growing slowly.

Also the typical for those plants are the doubled teeth that You see on the first picture, on other leafs there are more teeth with those "twice fingers" - same like Vampire clone.

I have typical Dentate form and it's looks different - the main is color dentate is not that colored when grows in sphagnum and same condition.

And yes it's looks great in my small VFT collection.

  11. Hi All

At last I found some time to update this topic.

As You see plants was colored in strong light.

It was flowered , but not fully opened – see flower stalk – flower was white and selfed.

I was harvested lots of seeds.

The main problem is that this one is very huge in compare with other four different locations spatulatas.

It has erected growing leafs and this is very different from those rosette shape of spatulata – see comparison with d. Spatulata Lantau Island.

Enjoy with the pictures, any news comments will be welcome.

    Regards

    drosrubr.jpg

  12. :-) I growing a few forms of d. spatutala and in my opinion this one had longest leafs - it's similary to d. oblanceolata that I growing too.

One of the plant start now to flowering, so in a week or two I will se the flower to check them better.

I will post info when I will had something new.

    Stephen you are right,

If this is a hybrid can we check this ?, is there anyone who grows this one too ?

    Regards

  13. Thanks for all comments.

I was wrote to source of this seed and here is the explain :

    D. rubripetala is a sinonym of D. cistiflora, I know it, but in the last years in Europe this name was used to rename this plant, this is the answer from Andy to this question in 22/4/08:

No, the D.rubripetala that is circulating in Eastern Europe is not

D.cistiflora. They are very different sps. The D.rubripetala that I have

purchased from Europe is more like a D.venusta X red spathulata hybrid -

very different from D.cistiflora which is very erect and more beautiful!!

There is a piture of my D.rubripetala on my website under. shop, seeds,

    sundews.

So in this case should I use this name for this plant or no :-) ?

I don't like to grow plants with no Id :tu:

    Regards

  14. Hi

Please see my plants that I growing labeled as d. rubripetala.

I was receive seeds of them marked as d. rubripetala but there is not to much information about them, is this right name for this one ?
