    Hi Everyone.

Welcome. You'll find lots of growing experience here. Regards Alex.
  2. Didn't GLC tell us you were in Hip Hop heaven? Welcome back. Cheers Alex.
  3. Hi Mike I've voted for yes, but only just! Its a very nice plant, I tend to agree that too many plants have been registered that don't deserve it and I would like to see a little more work with this plant, maybe back cross it with S "Judith Hindle" or take a totally different route. I think its very important that only the best plants are registered as cultivars, Adrian Salck (the man not the plant) as stated in the articel recently posted here would only put forward for registration a very small number of plants that he would consider 'finished' (a term for a cross that is still happening that I've just coined!). What do you think? Don't mean to sound negative, its a good looking plant, keep up the good work. Regards Alex.
  4. Yes, but he has been very ill. Maybe someone else knows his present condition. Alex.

    Another first

    Very nice Andy. Alex.
  6. Can't really add more than the Bob's link, thanks for that. I had been trying to gather all of Slack's Sarracenia cultivars for ages, along with Mike King. Finally last year Mike was able to confirm that we had found what I had suspected to be the original S 'Daniel Rudd', and a year before that, S excellens 'Lochness' had turned up. As far as I'm aware, there are now no other plants that are missing, but there are a few strange crosses that are reputed to have come from Adrian but have no cultivar status. I've never met him, but I know that he still lives in the West Country, I believe that he grows a couple of plants but don't think that he has any real interest in CP commmunity. Cheers Alex.
  7. Good luck Matt, this sounds an epic challenge. Keep us posted. Alex
  8. Very nice photo's, thanks for posting. I like the '"Lidless" plants, I have a couple myself, one is a flava x alata hybrid. I like also the red VFT, is that Pink Venus? Regards Alex.
  9. Ha ha. Must be a huge rhizome under there! Alex.
  10. Hi Les I'll see if I can make this one, will confirm nearer the time. Cheers Alex.
  11. I'll be with you on Saturday, first time for me, may be with you early so can help set up. Alex.
  12. Very nice James, a great looking greenhouse. I see a larger CP collection featuring in your future. Alex,
  13. From the bottom question up, unlikely, now, and depends on what size pots you have and it would be good if we could see a photograph. To be more specific, you really only need to repot the plants if the crowns of the plant are against the lip of the pot or of they have been in the same pot for three years or so. The roots poking out from the bottom are not a problem, many of mine do and if they get really long I trim them back, it doesn't harm the plant at all. If you do decide to the repot, then you don't have to divide it up if you are putting the whole rhizome into a larger pot that can comfortably hold it with room to grow. Late winter and spring is the best time to do this, but some growers do this year round and don't seem to have trouble, but I would not recommend it myself. Could you kill it? More than likely not, Sarracenia are pretty hardy plants, as long as you use the right potting medium, peat and perlite, then you should be fine. I wrote a guide to repotting on this forum, I don't know where it is now, try searching the archive, but its pretty simple to be honest, but any problems, post here or PM me. I hope this helps Alex.
  14. Hi Guys Before I go any further, let me just say I can guarantee that anyone who has received plants from me, they are correctly labelled and as described. I have only passed on plants to other people where I can be certain of positive I.D. So here is the problem, since I took over the collection of Phil Wilson a few years ago I have been struggling to ‘restore’ it and get it back into some sort of order with an up to date grow list and correct codes. This year I have made a lot of progress and have now arranged all the plants so they’re at least under glass and in species order, I have got the VFT’s in their own greenhouse with correct grow list but now the Sarracenia need a good sorting. There are many plants where the tags have become illegible either through either being sun bleached or, less commonly have broken and large parts are missing, several have no tags at all. Obviously, the plants that are unidentifiable will have to stay as they are until the summer when the pitchers are up and then hopefully I have some friends who will be able to help and sort them, but my question is this, “should I rewrite a completely new grow list with new codes?” I can keep the PW codes where known as additional data but as the old PW list bares scant resemblance to what is actually growing, I think in the long run I might be better off, that option number 2, below. The other option, I could sit down with my computer on my lap in the greenhouse and Phil’s grow list and work out what is there, what is correctly labelled, what plants I have added, what are Phil’s, what are AWOL etc etc. I’m thinking of the former, less work and I’ll have put my own stamp on the collection and make it my own. What do you guys think? Cheers Alex.
  15. Hello and welcome. Alex.
  16. Like the above, sorry to hear of the losses Bill, a sad tale indeed. So far, tpuc wood, I've been quite lucky and have lost only a amall number of plants this year. Alex
  17. Sorry to hear you're selling up Dunc, hope you'll be back with us again. Paypal will still refund their buyer if the plant is lost in the post. In an ideal world the parcekwill be sent recoreded so its trackable. But if its lost, its lost and that is your problem. Alex.
  18. I've not even begun to start dividing up the plants yet. Frankly, its far, far too cold. Must get out there this weekend and see what I can do. I've not seen any new growth yet. Alex.
  19. Sorry for the delay, I'm going to start splitting plants up in the next week, I know you're after an F69, and I know that I have one for you. I will have a look for the others and divide them up for you as and when I find them, but I did split up the leuco's last year so may not have large divisions of them or indeed, any at all, Regards, Alex.

  21. I was working on a copy of Rarioum Plantarum Historia by Charles Lecluse, printed in Antwerp in 1601 and look what I came across. I’ve been in touch with Phil Wilson and neither of us knows of, or is aware of, any earlier description of Sarracenia. As Phil pointed out, this would have been before Linnaeus so the plant name is different to that we know it today. Sadly, I don’t speak Latin so cannot translate the text, but this is a very beautiful book and an online scan can be seen here: http://www.botanicus.org/title/b12075048 The Sarracenia is on page 458. Hope this is of some interest Alex.
  22. Its not only temperature that triggers dormancy. Photoperiod, the amount of time that the plants are in daylight is just as, if not more so important. The shorter days and longer nights will have sent your plants into dormancy, don’t worry if your plants have not died back, its not a sign or dormancy anyway. Regards Alex
  23. Strong winds here, but luckily no damage to greenhouses. Sorry to hear about the damage Manders, but sounds like it could have been worse. Alex.
