  1. Has anybody succesfully built a peltier cooling system for a terrarium? I have researched the subject for some time. I have found companies that sell pre-assembled coolers. I will probably build my own to cut costs and learn stuff. I am wondering what would be better for the plants: air cooling or water cooling. Could the cold air shock the plants?   3. The quick answer would be the natural habitat altitude range. There are numerous differences, enough to be contained in a whole book! one main difference in cultivation is that highlands favor lower temperatures at night than lowlands. This classification is fairly rough because some are considered midrange and others are considered ultra-highland. For more details on Nepenthes, I recommend Charles Clark's 2 books.

  7. I dont agree on that. If what you say is true, if the flow rate would theoreticaly pushed to infinity, the temperature of the heat exchanger would reach absolute zero. That is not possible. I believe that the heat exchange would be optimal when you could find the peak system flow rate (i.e. when increasing the flow rate would lower the heat exchange performance). I believe that the correct word in english would be coil (to maximize the heat exchanger surface area).
  8. How is this plant different from D. madagascariensis (assuming that it can as red as that one)?
  9. Why do you spec a high flow rate pump? Water circulating too fast will not have the time to be cooled down by the cooler again. Ther result will be that the water temp will rise gradually until the system attains stabilisation point. In order to maximize the water heat exchange in the terrariums, you will probably want to have it make a serpentine inside. Also, the basic concept of cooling the water, that will in turn cool the air above it is not the best because cool air does NOT rise up, it will stay low on the bottom. Good luck with your project!
  10. Hi D. Truesdell, the soil was coco peat mixed with perlite. It didnt look too compacted to me, but then again I have lost several Nepenthes due to inadequate soil. I was begining to question the coco peat quality, but I have a N. diatas in the same mix doing fine... For highland Nepenthes, I will try to stick with LFS combined with some coarse materials from now on.
  11. The plant was not subject to cold and was in it's current environement for several months (a terrarium). However, it had daily water misting on its leaves. I repoted it with NZ LFS and perlite, the roots seems OK. I also treated the whole plant with fungicide. The N. sibuyanensis is a fussy plant, I have less problems with other highlands such as N. lowii and N. diatas :o
