Full Version: Posting photo's

I've been 'narked' by this for a while now - so lets get this off my cheast.

When people are posting photo's would they please reduce them to a reasonable size. A number of people keep posting photo's of huge size, some even aproaching 1MB or more - these take forever to download.

This is bad enough when you only post a couple, but some people post loads of a huge size. So then I don't even bother to wait and just go back without ever seeing the pic's. Now I suspect I'm not the only one - so you may see a high number of viewings for your post - but that doesn't mean people actually bothered to wait and see anything.

So PLEASE, follow rule 9 of this forum - rules are there for a reason rtfm.gif
9]> Posted images should be of a reasonable size. A maximum of 750 x 750 pixels is suggested. Larger images may be linked off-site.

Is there a post anywhere on the forum that explains how to upload photos easily? I'm sure something used to be pinned up, but it's disappeared.

Yesterday I was struggling to post just two photos, which I do very infrequently. I searched and searched but found nothing to tell me how to link to the images. In the end I had to use the 'new improved' CPUK Photo Hosting - which has a maximum size of 1 MB.

If someone could pin up clear instructions I'm sure it would help the non-technically minded (like me unsure.gif ), and the size issue could be covered in the same place. Just a thought ..

I host on imageshack, you have resize images on there, in a little tick box, so it's really no trouble at all to change the size ;)

no resize, but a way faster, and more stable service than imageshack.

Sam, I think you'll find that is the maximum pic size - not the total volume for all pic's.

Unless you were wanting to post pic's of even more than 1 MB.

There have been discusions on which programmes are best for resizing pic's. I use IRFANVIEW - it's freely downloadable, easy to use and allows quite a lot of playing around with your pic's. That way you can resize then on your comp before hosting them anywhere.

http://tinypic.com/ is an easy to use photo hosting site, which also resizes pictures and provides the [img] code for posting directly into forum posts.

It does have resize, it's one of the 'Image Enhancement Options'

That link just tells you how to resize pics. What I meant was, where are the guidelines telling users how to actually upload an image from one of the hosting sites? I'm sure there used to be a sticky about it but I couldn't find it anywhere. If someone could post instructions, the size limit and how to adhere to it could be covered there. There must be plenty of people like me who would welcome clearer guidance.

That was possibly my sticky guide on how to use CPUK forum photo hosting. The hosting has now changed, making my guide redundant and I think it has been deleted. I could possibly create a new guide but the above mentioned picture hosting sites are all suitable for forum use and they all automatically create [img] tags which can be copied and directly pasted into forum topics.

Maybe one of the mods could sort something out (ahem)?

The new CPUK Hosting site allows individual pics up to 1 MB, so if people post images directly from there (as I did, in desperation) we are going to see a lot of outsize photos on the forum.

It's fairly common practice to make sure internet images aren't any larger than 300k or so.

I'm very familiar with posting pictures on the internet but this is not the case for everyone. Without adequate guidelines then people will simply transfer the photos from their camera, without knowing any better. I usually post at 600px x 800px, but I don't recall reading any advise on what size to use. The new CPUK Photo Hosting is very nice but it does not appear to have a resizing feature. There are probably a good number of users who are not familiar with resizing pictures either locally or on the internet. The above suggested photo hosting sites, http://tinypic.com/, http://xs.to/ and http://imageshack.us/, as well as others, have resizing facilities, so may be more suitable for those who can't/don't know how to resize images but guidance on the size to use is still required. Maybe Andy could implement something on CPUK Photo Hosting to facilitate resizing and possibly force a maximum size limit?

From memory (it's been a few days), this new CPUK photo hosting does give the option for posting 'thumb nail' images - useful for anyone who hasn't reduced them first.

For anyone not familiar with how to resize their pic's. When I was first working out what & how to do it, I found a very useful tutorial on the web on how to use IRFANVIEW - it is REALLY simple (if I can can do it). It also allows you to lighten or darken your images, crop the images and so much more (as they all do).

Another improvement with this new hosting is the bulk uploading. The old one only allowed 10 pics at a time. This new one allows many more - not sure on the limit, as I stopped at 15 pic's.

Hi All

Probably teaching a grandmother to suck eggs, but if you right click on your chosen picture and then click 'send to' and then click 'mail recipient', your computer will automatically ask you if you want to make your picture(s) smaller. Click yes and then wait a minute until a new box opens. Click 'File/save attachments' and save your newly re-sized (smaller pic) where you want. No software needed!!! I've posted all my pictures this way.

Cheers

I'll second that, this makes sending pics so much faster..
Thanks for the advice!

I didn't know that either - shame it doesn't adjust the colour as well.

On my comp, it doesn't ask if I want it resized, it automatically sticks a resized version in attachments. It took a moment to find save attachments - but I found it in 'File'.

I'm sure that will be a great help to some Andy.
