Full Version: Drosera alba in southafrica

Hi,

the next plant i want to show you is Drosera alba. We only found them on the Gifberg, but it is also known from a location in the Cedar Mountains (but we couldn't find them there). We found two forms, that are somehow different.

The Gifberg:

There is no developed roads, that bring you up to the plateau. If i remember correctly, you have to drive about 30km on very sandy and stony runways like that:

If you make it up to the plateau without having a flat tyre (we had one in the middle of that road) you will find yourself on a flat plateau. From there on it is not really hard to find D. alba.

Interestingly, we also found some plants, that had light pink flower and that were smaller than the other ones we found on the plateau.

I hope, you don't mind me opening one thread for each of the species we found!

regards,
Christian

Fantastic pics!!! I've never been able to get such red coloration in cultivation...could it be the difference of temperature between day and night?
Which kind of soil is that?

They are so beautiful... Did you see all of South African species of Drosera or some have escaped you?

He is still there...so I think that his goal is to find them all :-)
Christian
Hi,

we did find almost all of the species! We missed one so far undescribed Drosera and one undescribed Utricularia as well as D. ramentacea. Depending on what you think about all the D. cistiflora forms, we have missed some more. Besides this, we found them all (i think).

Absolutely gorgeous shok.gif
Many thanks for that so beautiful thread Christian. That is probably one of my favourite Drosera species. The pale pink flowered form seems very promising, a shame flowers were not opened. But marvelous species anyway thumbsup.gif

Wonderful, I love SAF sundew and it is very educative to see them growing in their natural habitat. Thanks for sharing, I will be waiting for more species.

Hi,

glad to hear, that you like the pictures!

Iggy: All i can say about the weather is, that this place is known for rain on everday (at least in winter?!). It was very cold, windy, fogy and rainy at the day we have been there. I suppose, that's the typical weather there. Many of the CP-locations we found have been surprisingly cold!
