Hi everybody,

One day, a friend gave me a Drosera capensis as a present for my birthday. I didn’t know this kind of carnivorous plant, only the flytrap (most common ones). So I started with this nice little plant.
Then I bought a Drosera capensis alba.
Some weeks ago, there was a European exchange and I bough several plants some for a terrarium and some to put them on a window sill.
Here is a list of the one I bought:

- Utricularia sandersonii
- Cephalotus follicularis
- Nepenthes x hookeriana
- Sarracenia psittacina
- Heliamphora x heterodoxa x minor
- Drosera collinsae
- Pinguicula x tina
- Pinguicula cyclosecta
- Drosera scorpoïdes
- Drosera admirabilis
- Drosera adelae

I bought also a small aquarium (60 (L) x 35 (w) x 60 (h)).
For now on, I built my terrarium with
- Utricularia sandersonii
- Cephalotus follicularis
- Nepenthes x hookeriana
- Sarracenia psittacina
- Heliamphora x heterodoxa x minor
- Pinguicula cyclosecta
- Drosera admirabilis
- Drosera adelae
For the lamps, I use 3 neons 18w daylight. For the bottom, I use “clay” marbles. For the ground, it’s 3 volumes of peat and 1 of sand.

Here is a overview of the terrarium:

(I'll try to make better photos)

As the temperature doesn’t go higher than 21°c, I think I’ll renew the terrarium. According to some advices, I’ll remove the psittacina to put it outside. I’ll also put a aquarium heating system set on 24-25°, a pomp. For the bottom, I’ll replace it with quartz sand.

For the different plants, do you have any advice on how I could put them in the terrarium?

edit: do you think also that my 3 neons is enough?
thanks

Many thanks.

you've got a nice mixture of plants there!
it's just.. you cant plant lowlanders and highlanders like heliamphora x nutans x heterodoxa together.. the one needs temperature drops at night the other one likes a constant temp...

the thing with neons.. what kind of neon tubes?
i'd recommend t5 tubes. t8 are okay as well.

cheers

Hey,

For the neon, I'll replace them by 2 led panel (red and bleu leds).
Because I noticed that the drosera alicia is diing and the drosera adelae is growing really fast.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make a new terrarium with a fridge system.

I'll remove the psittacina, with this modification, I'll have more place.

Beside the Highland heliamphora, you think will grow "normally"?

Thanks for your advice ;-)
and thanks for your compliment nyam.gif

This week end, I'll rearrange my terrarium.
I'll remove the sarracenia and put it in a pot. Samething for the Utricularia sandersonii.

I'll have more place for the other plants nyam.gif

Once it's done, I'll make some pictures and post them here

Also, when I'll receive the led panel, I'll make a ventillation system to avoid a too enclosed terrarium

I have tried to grow U. sandersonii in my small lowland terrarium and it does not flower well. It does much better on my windowsill.

Why are you replacing the clay marbles with quartz sand? The clay marbles will work better as a water reservoir, make it easier to see the water level and provide better aeration, especially if you plunge a plastic pipe down through the soil into them. The pipe could also be used for adding water directly to the reservoir.

See how you get on with the LED panels but some of them, especially the cheaper ones using standard LEDs, do not have enough intensity, and in some cases are the wrong wavelength, for good plant growth.
