Hey, i was considering taking some Dionaea and Cephalotus leaf pullings and ive heard that the younger the age of the leaf the greater the strike rate.

In relation to Dionaea leaf pullings, does using a leaf that is still in the process of producing a trap at the end have a good strike rate or does this just complicate things?

Any help would be appreciated
LJ
I tend to pick out the fresh greener leaves for cephs, these seem to work best (atleast for me), I've never compared whether you get a better strike rate with younger leaves of vfts though - as long as the base of the leaf is healthy it should work fine for vfts. The newer leaves producing fresh traps normally come from the centre of the plant and its easier to pull off the ones from the outer section of the bulb - ie the older leaves, you really need to keep the base of the leaf intact and this will be difficult if the leaf is in the centre, no doubt you would have to remove the outer leaves anyway to enable you to pull off the inner ones with an intact leaf base.

Hope that helps a bit....

Thats a good point, i wasn't too keen on some of the older ones as they've been knocking around all winter, but i'll just have a go and see what happens.

Not the question you raised but I find live LFS to be an excellent medium for Ceph & VFT leaves.

I'd second what Jim says - I find live sphagnum works best for me too, though peat also works.....

Yeah ive heard that too. Unfortunately i dont have any LFS on me at the moment so im gonna try using peat/perlite and if that doesnt work then i'll stump up for some LFS happy.gif

Might try using just sphagnum moss. Thats what i use as a medium, and it works great, i have a leaf cutting i took about a month or 2 ago, and its starting to put out a growth, and a root. I took a growth point division of my mother ceph and put that into some sphagnum, well see how it is in a month, along with another small leaf that came off on accident.
