I asked on here a while ago about an ID for a cactus I got from the 99p store. It's been growing fine, but now I've noticed a yellowish mould? growing on one side on thetop of the soil. Also, the top middle spikes on the main body are orange. Any help?
LJ
Can you post a picture??

Mould on top of the soil isnt normally anything to worry about, I normally just scrape it off and replace with fresh soil.

Not quite sure what you mean by the top middle spikes though?? Does it still look healthy??

Well, here's the orangey spikes:

It looks healthy enough, but I just wanted to check.

And sorry about the fuzziness (macro didn't go close enough) but the yellow/white stuff you see in the soil is the fungus/mould stuff.

LJ
Mould/fungus normally make an appearance when its damp, so just make sure you arent overwatering it!!

Not sure about the orange spikes though, but if it seems healthly then I wouldnt worry.

the orangy spines are just the colour of the new growth. As for the strange mould/fungus I have seen it in pots before and if it worries you you can scrape it off or repot the cactus, I have no idea what causes it, maybe someone else will know but I have never known it do any harm. the cactus (Echinocactus Grusonii) looks very healthy. icon13.gif
