Hi all,
I just recived a pakage of mixed lithops seeds and have researched how to sow them. I have found several sites and the most suggested way that I found was to sow them on standard cactus mix with larger chunks of rock added, and to put them under growlights in a plastic bag until you see several sprouts, then take them out of the bag and slowly adjust to full sun. Is this how everybody else germinates them? Any advice is greatly apreciated.
Thanks,
Shawn

Cactus soil mixed 50-50 with sand, sprinkle on top, keep moist and very high humidity in full sun. I use an aquarium with a clear top.

yes I put clingfilm over the pot until they germinate, then remove. They need high humidity to germinate.

Here's the set up I've been using for two years. You can, depending on the heat, move the cover to where it totally covers the inside or partially. They seem to be able to stand well over 100F without any problems, though, to get them to germinate. Then to protect from fungus attack, open it gradually.

Shawn, I initially sowed a package of 100 lithop seeds in February in similar conditions that are shown in Tim's picture. I managed about a 40% germination rate in the tank. Following germination I moved them to a south facing window sill during the months of April-July. I kept the medium moist prior to germination. Now I water the soil every 2-3 weeks.
For the most part, they have been growing with vigor. Several are starting to gain their true from and textures, although they are still small. This has worked for me but I sure there are other things that I could do for them.
I used a standard cacti mix from a nursery supplier.
