Are there any cactus experts out there? Could anyone tell me what is wrong with my brother in laws cactus – it doesn’t look long for this world in my opinion.

The plant is scarred for life, but provided that the flesh is still firm it may well be OK. The scarring looks typical for scorching. Suddenly placing the plant in full sun can cause this type of damage.

another possible cause is irregular watering - shrinkage caused by drought followed by rapid expansion caused by an excess of water can cause cracks like that.
It could also be slug or snail damage (depending on where the plant is grown, of course) - I've caught them munching on my optunia before now, and the wounds are very similar.
Like Aidan, I very much doubt the plant will die - it's healed up nicely.
