Here's an interesting result-I crossed two different S. flava var. rubricorporas from Liberty Co, FL, and the offspring were, for the most part, rubricorporas.  However, I had a few that turned out to be what is currently defined as S. flava var. atropurpurea.

Unlike other rubricorporas, which will start with yellow lids that turn solid red (those are still by today's naming system considered atropurpurea), the pitchers on this clone are solid red right when the trap opens.

Even though genetically we know they came from rubricorporas, the current naming system would label these atropurpureas.  Can a different variant arise from another variant?  What's your opinion?  Feel free to vote on the poll above.

I've heard of S. flava var. flava and S. flava var. maxima coming out from a cross between 2 S. flava var. rugelii, and nobody was surprised, so i guess now it's my turn not to be surprised by S. flava var. atropurpurea coming out from S. flava var. rubricorpora... ;)
I don't know the criteria they are classified with, though... (genetics? morphology?...)
