hi guys, well the pings have died back into the moss and i want to protect them through the winter.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to over winter the hibernaculas?
I was thinking of taking the moss they are resting in, making sure it was damp and sealing them in plastic food containers....
I'm worried that , as i keep the water trays pretty much dry over winter for the sarras and vfts they will dry out and die.
could someone please give me some advice/ pointers on this as tempus, as ever, fugits on.....

In my experience they will happily sit outside wet and frozen just watch they don't get washed away or fiddled with by pests.
Equally under cover and moist or wet, maybe set the hardy pings in thier own tray to keep some moisture but I assume the VFT's will not be allowed to dessicate either.
Can I ask what particular plants you are enquiring about?

I'm sure they will be fine as they are providing they do not get too dry, having said that I'm not sure how dry they can take it.
Perhaps someone on here has some first hand experience of dried out pots.

leave them as they are,moss and everything.They will be o.k just damp.
The only one i find that has to be kept dry is p.alpina.

Do they have any species names attached with them or just "the pings"?

For the following species I cannot find better cultivation conditions than outdoors in their mini-bogs:
- Pinguicula grandiflora
- Pinguicula macroceras ssp. nortensis
Outdoor cultivation keeps them in their best possible natural rhythm of growing and resting.

Plants in pots do not as well as the plants in bigger mini-bogs.

As a winter protection when frost and no snow is present I use a thin garden fleece.

thanks guys. i think i might take Ian's advice and put them and their substrate in their own tray ... maybe an old propagator?

Might be best to not use a propogator lid as it might get too stuffy and encourage fungal attacks.
Last year some were under benches in the greenhouse with some water, some were outside in a cloche with some water, some were outside in pots flooded and a group were in a pot like yours outside in a water tray and some I had growing for a few years in Sphagnum moss on a big pot of Sarracenia outside permanently.
They don't seem fussy lol.

on your picture IMINEI I see a Grandiflora subsp grandiflora

you can keep all the temperate outdoor all the year  ( snow or frost  is not a problem for them when they are in hibernaculae )  an exception all the  Crystallina species  these species make no hibernaculae.

Lusitanica also  but it is a annual species  ( sometimes  we find them in leaves  under the snow here in FRANCE)

the substrat must be always wet   like 'in situ' on all the temperate

3 substrats for these species : acid-unspecified-calcareous  see here to "habitats" My link  it is in french you can translate with google .

you have not mentioned the bloody birds in spring that steal the moss in which the hibernacula reside and (2 years gone) my most prized drosera rotundifolia!...which is why the pings are now kept indoors!!!!

thanks for the advices, guys, and yes, the thought of fungus has passed my mind...its just the greenhouse is a pretty unvisited place in the winter...dessication v's fungus..mmmnn tricky.
