Is there an ideal temperature for plants to be in to induce dormancy or is it just a matter of seeing what works best?

What conditions are they in for you to need to induce dormancy artificially?

Well I'm not trying to artificially induce dormancy now, I just keep them in a warm house at the moment and am having to think of somewhere I could put them in winter to allow them to go into dormancy. I was just wondering if there was an ideal temperature for this or not, 'cause I'd rather not keep them somewhere that might kill them or somewhere that might still not be cold enough.

put them in a shed or garage window, or outside in cold frame or one of those polytene mini greenhouse type things, or in a unheated room. Your looking for a temp that is below about 10c most of the time.
