Ptari tepui

Recommended Posts

Hi,

some impressions from Ptari tepui - I'll start with the mountain itself. Seen from the Los Testigos chain, the shape of Ptari looks like the perfect tepui:

The very clear geometrical form may let it appear somehow small from a distance. But when you get closer, things change - look at those huge cliffs!

The mountain's edge had a strong attraction to me. Hard to believe, that from here it is several hundred meters straight down to the rainforest. Especially when the clouds mask the sight:

Then it suddlenly cleared up, and my knees wished back those clouds wink.gif

The plants obviously do not have those problems - they grow up to the very edge:

The plateau itself is nearly totally flat. Here some typical view over the mountain.

So there is nothing to stop the clouds, once they have overcome the mountain walls, and the top gets covered in fog within a few moments.

The flatness of the mountain brings some real problems for travellers. First, when it rains, there is hardly a dry place to find for the tents, and water will build up rapildy evereywhere. There were little hills to find, that may promise a dryer place. But when you get into a thunderstorm (what is not very unlikely there), your tent will be one of the highest points of the mountain! So we avoided those little hills for the tents and set up the tents below them - better wet than grilled! Luckily, we had a safe night.

As fast as the clouds came up, it cleared up again, and left the plants covered in millions of dewdrops. Hard to catch that very special atmosphere:

Two last views from the edge.

What a horizon!

Part II will be about the Heliamphora on Ptari. Hope to see you there -

Martin

Thanks

Those moments when the sun came out and let the dewy trees sparkle in the fresh light are really unforgettable. Like so many other great experiences on this journey...still some interesting pics in my archives left for you

Regards

Martin
