[Papilio]

Hello all!




I really don't understand why my sphagnum dies in my lowland terrarium...  
Temperature is 24°C in general and the humidity around 60% (70/80 at night) but it is never dry....
No ventilation for the moment.

That's very curious, I have the exact opposite problem in that it pops up everywhere and sometimes smothers small seedlings.  - Rich

sphagnum also is pretty touchy and I find that it starts dying when conditions change. However...after a few months...given that there are still green parts, it should grow back.

Maybe it is excess UV from your lamps? You could try a layer of glass between the lamps and the terrarium to filter the UV.

But my sphagnum grew very well few months ago.... Just temperatures changed (18>24°C)!
vraev, it's probably for this reason it dies?

Perhaps you have to much water in pot ? I see in my sphagnum that he really like high humidity but he doesn't like to much water.

Do you have the plants planted in pure live spaghnum or have you just top dressed the pots?
If it is just top dressed then it could be that it dont get any water.
I have had a hard time growing live spaghnum as top dressing on pots.
It seems that it dries out to quickly.
But If I have the whole pot full with live spaghnum then it grows out of control.
And the spaghnum I have have which have received to much light has burned tips. They go completely black. So I dont think thats the problem.

Hi Louis,
I think it is too high a temperature, sphag is very sensitive to many things, too much feed and fungicides can cause black tips.
I grow loads of sphag in my highland setup, but if I put some into the lowland side, min 22c it all but dies.

Ok, I think I have to change my temperature....

About light, I tried with a soft and high intensity.... but nothing changed.

I never feed my sphagnum and I just use it in surface...
