I have recently aquired some Aldrovanda, it is growing quite quickly but the traps are getting smaller! Does anyone have any idea why? The plant looks green and healthy, has tons of light (metal halide) and CO2.

It was covered in nice traps when I recieved it!

Thanks

Hi Binata,

How is mounted its tank/aquarium?
Filtering/water Circulation?
Fauna?
Other plants?
pH?
DK?
Temperature?
You use liquid fertilizers of micron-nutrients (Fe, Mn, Mg, Ca, Zn, Bo...)?
If he will not have no fauna in this tank would be good for using some liquid fertilizer for planted aquariums (I am using the Flourish of the Seachem)

It is in a plant tank, which gets fertilized and is full of other plants. My thoughts might be to much food, nitrogen, could reduce trap development??

pH around 7, fair water movement but not to much, I have some delicate plants in there! dKH don't know, LOL should be about 3-4dKH, temp 25c, there are a few fish in the tank...

It's growing quite fast :?

In another tank it is growing nice traps, just a tank thrown together to grow some plants in, no CO2, and a lot less light!

Also this is supposed to be a "red" form, what is the best way to bring out the red colour? It is from Norther Teritory, Australia.

Thanks
George

Hi George,

Tons of light?
Which the spectrum or temperature of color of the lamp?
Here I am using fluorescent lamps of the type for horticulture (Grolux, Aquaglo, Nutrigrow) combined with lamps fluorescent light-of-day of 6500K

Which the pH of this other tank? Here home, the pH is around 6. DK is also among 3-4dKH. My thermostat is adjusted for a temperature of 26-28ÂșC.

I don't think can be for an excess of Nitrogen, because recently I had an outbreak of green filamentous algae when the concentration of nitrate of the aquarium arrived to the almost 50ppm; however the aldrovandas continued to throw big and vigorous traps.

Maybe it is lack of some micronutrient... Do you use some complement / liquid fertilizer for aquariums?

Do you make change frequent of water? I make weekly changes of 25-33%, because besides they remove the excesses of nitrogen and fosfate help still to restore some micronutrients...

My aldrovandas rarely reach the red coloration, just the ones that are in a small tank outdoors...

I would probably say it is a nutrient thing, I will play around with a few variables. At least it is growing well so I am not about to lose it.

Thanks for the help, and amazing photos Alex!!

Thought I should keep you all updated on the Aldrovanda. I think the problem was fertlizer, not enough!!

I would have thought the small traps would be to much so the plant dosn't need to trap food. I increased the amount of trace elements and presto the traps are looking good, excapt for the fact that some of my fish seem to think they are tasty little treats!!
