Hello !



This is some shots of my Catopsis berteroniana. I only grow this species since the beginning of the year but still, it has surprised me with the steadiness of its growth. The plant has doubled in size and is currently developing a flower scape.

I grow this tank bromeliad as an epiphyte in one of my highland terrarium. Set at a 10 cm distance from the tubes, it receives, just like all my highland Nepenthes a diluted  orchid fertilizer foliar spray once a month. The plant starts to adorn that fluorescent robe typical of the wild plants. How nice... :

You seem to have great success with all of the plants you grow! Your plants are beautiful!
This species grows in the heat and humidity of South Florida. I have never tried to grow it in highland conditions.
I have grown many plants of this species from seed, produced by a single plant. I hope you can get your plant pollenated.
The inflorescence gets quite long, so it may be difficult under artificial lighting.

Thanks for the nice words Steven. But you're pulling my leg ! I wish i could grow tropical Drosera, for example, as well as my pitcher plants but i did not a very good job three years ago so i gave the remaining plants to a seasoned friend.
I will give it another try quite soon though. Sundews are fantastic plants.

About the Catopsis, i hope to grow it from seeds too. I've read that Catopsis could be found at locations as high as 2000m (the species can be found between sea level and 2000 m). Because the specimen i was given was grown in a highland greenhouse, i placed it in a highland terrarium. I would sure appreciate to place one of these bromeliads in my lowland tank.

Yes, the flower scape is a bit problematic. I think i will place my Catopsis in a windowsill and put it back in the terrarium (after a few months) when the flowers will have vanished.

WOW Nice Plant

I just came across this thread and decided to post also a picture of my Catopsis. The three thrives are about 30 cm high and 40 cm broad. The plant grows inside a  show case at our living room using a 400W metal-vapour lamp.

Happy new year Amar! I received it as a small plant from Lorenz Buetschi (Switzerland) about 1988, so it is more than 20 years old.

I suppose the plants are grown under warm conditions as they are in your living-room?

I grew a Catopsis very well in a lowland terrarium for several years, seemed to like the heat!

Yes, the plant grew always under hot conditions. The first 10 years at our tropical greenhouse and since 1998 inside the show case at our living room. Heat is provided by the 400 W lamp and humidity by a professional ultrasonic nebulizer.

really nice plants.
It seems to be a fast grower, only in 2 years so big, not bad.

I also would like to grow such a plant, but for my sadness i don´t have the space for such a big plant.
