Other People's Reactions

Recommended Posts

Something which I've really noticed since getting into CPs is the rather large amount of negative reactions I get from other people. Whilst some of my friends and family really quite enjoy them I've had a lot of people saying that they don't like 'that sort of thing', that they're morbid, that I'm unnecessarily killing insects and that I need to start keeping other, 'easier', plants.

The latter in particular really quite irks me as I actually find most CPs to be a lot easier to look after than other plants.

Is this an experience which anyone else shares or have I just been particularly unlucky?

I've not had anything like that before. I've had a handful of people that don't seem interested I admit but more often than not people take an interest and I get asked loads of questions.

Stick with your family and friends,  I hope the "other people"  have flies infesting their kitchen.  Buy some more CPs!

Not found that (yet). I added a few to a talk on evolution I do for a local school and the kids loved it, and auctioned (for the school) a small starter collection and the bids went up to £45, so clearly popular here

Yeah, I've had this.  Some people think it's really weird keeping plants which use insects as part of their 'diet'.  They seem to think it reveals a sadistic streak in my nature.

I used to keep snakes, loads of them.  The reaction was the same.

Funny old world.

I've also had reptiles , amphibians and other beasts @Guy

Its just a fondness for the more unusual things.

I have no time for  house flies or wasps but I must admit I get a little saddened when I see some of the other victims....

Last year every pitcher on my sarras was crammed with hover fly corpses and I find those little acrobatic insects fascinating .....

"The plants have to eat though" I tell myself.....

See it at the shows sometimes. Ignore them, their ignorance will remain long after you’ve forgotten about them.

It takes all sorts so I wouldn't worry. Some people like watching 22 silly b...ers chasing after a round lump of plastic on a nice field for 90 mins trying to get it between 2 sticks. I've never understood that!

That's something I can relate to!

Interesting to hear the sorts of responses you all have had and it's good to know that for the most part they've been positive.

Saw a couple at a show once, passing a cp stand the guy said oh look i really like those, his wife/gf said ‘cant stand those things’ and he got dragged reluctantly away.  Poor sod i thought, time for a new wife, lol.

Hmm I haven't ever met with such situation. In my country CP are something uncommon - I noticed that they just started being sold in shops. For my friends and family those plants are also new, but they have never said that they are insects killers etc. They support me and help as much as they can. Maybe you should familiarize your family with those plants, so maybe they won't be so sceptical.

One friend doesnt care, another thinks theyre amazing and loves vft. Family couldnt care less apart from my mum wishing there were less flies indoors and impressed with the amount the sarracenias catch.

What matters is what you think

and yes, I too find most carnivorous plants a lot easier than most plants

I have a bog in my front yard, filled with S.flava mostly.

Every spring and summer there are a lot of people walking by who stop at my garden admiring those Sarracenis's

When I see them I will try to pop out of the house and tell them about the plants. I never had any negative reactions, especially when I tell them they also catch wasps.

They mostly want to know where to get them

Greetings from the Netherlands
