2018's Sarracinia sowing

Hi all,

the first batch of seeds have been sown here, if you have a few years to spare I would like to share J

Have concentrated mainly on Leucophylla and Moorei hybrids to start with, tried to get a reasonably diverse bunch but at the same time where possible I have tried to find a few similar as well. I would of liked to have seen more Oreophila, Alata, Rubra and Flava (etc etc etc lol) looking down this list but I have a few within these and will try to find more.

Anyway there are 4000 seeds, no lights, no feeding and no staying warm for the first winter - although they will be protected. Outside in tents in the poly to protect against weather and birds etc but lifted when possible. These are as large as I could make them for air volume and movement, all have ventilation as there is no plastic on the base just slats or mesh and as the tunnel is a state air movement is good. First were sown on the 9th of Jan the latest on the 30th, all in straight peat moss in whatever suits the seed count and using untreated rainwater.

So we started with ebay last year and Chris Crow at Sarracenia nurseries offering 1500 open pollinated seeds for not a lot. Bumble bees and Karma are part of life so combined with a couple of photos of crammed glasshouses it’s an adventure not to be missed and we have high hopes for nature’s randomness! Marked S1 and all sowed much thicker as there is plenty of them.

Next was Cedric’s ebay listings, I bought a WWK from him so I really wanted to choose a couple of crosses to go with that, after a while I manage to choose a few to go with them. I realise I may struggle to demonstrate this but this has been an exercise of restraint all round, would have been easy to choose a few more but very fortunate to have the following here and cannot wait for them to give us a glimpse.

Whilst on my travels trying to find out about a few of the above I came across Jerry Addington next. I love the AF plants so I could not resist a few crosses involving those, looks like a good few years of work has gone into them so really pleased to be able to have these here as well. Have a few HCW’s and some Flava Ornata to try also which I am equally excited about! Also as a bonus included was the Oreophila cross which I really hope to see, sounds great and makes me feel better after whittling over a hundred choices down to ten.

That made it two for France and two for the US now and I can spot a good excuse a mile away, another UK based source was needed. I looked around and from ebay seller pinkbetty2010 (is on here too I think) there was a bunch together and I liked the sound of all of them, lots of great plants involved and a whole set in itself really so I thought why not and lots more carefully labelled packets turned up.

I will keep checking them three times a day lol and I’ll put up any progress here. My aim basically is to have a bunch of seedlings to take to mature plants and everything that goes with that so I will take some photos along the way. Results wise if I have one decent plant, you know good colour and form etc, that I like from each cross then massive win, 10 would be from the whole lot but it is more than that. It is just having a bunch to enjoy, observe and learn from.

Here’s a couple of photos showing some containers of peat. More exciting things to follow soon I hope J

Wow Dean, very neat and tidy. My poly looks like a bomb has hit it, and the bantams are always in there chocking the gravel floor around and generally scattering bits and pieces everywhere. Anyway, my mate (and boss) has agreed to a new greenhouse sometime in the summer so something to look forward to.

Wow! I hope you know what you're getting into;  that's a lot of plants you're going to have. Considering they need to be almost mature before you'll know which plants are 'the keepers' is 1 polytunnel enough....? Well best of luck with them. I look forward to following their progress.

Thanks Keith, all seed areas good rest not so lol, although chickens would stress me out at the moment! You mate sounds good and green houses in summer even better, hope you get it sorted, proper luxury in life to have space like that :)

Thanks Ordovic, yeah I think so, ten types of pickle and a swim somewhere?! All good, enough space this year to look after everything properly and need a new place to live anyway. Good to hear you will be checking out there progress, will be running with these for a while and will value the input, cheers

Hi Tracy, only that they are still safe and well and I presume enjoying the new Russian germination assistance programme! Just monitoring water levels and air movement to try and minimise the risk of moulds or rot and basically trying to ensure the seeds will crack for us come spring proper. Bit of protecting against wind, birds etc and should be up when the temps warm up a bit, fingers crossed!

Not matter the number the adventures the same and it is just the best! Let us know what you have going please, I would like to see - and then we have both to enjoy :)

Yeah it's a bit chilly Keith, shorts and sunshine gets my vote! It's as basic as it can be, S = Sarra seed bought in and the number (apart from an extra from Mr A) in what order they were bought. Just wants and resources, need data security basically (don't want things mixed up and want to know exactly what it is so this is part of making sure wind does not blow them about, a lovely but annoying Robin can not pull the label out / chuck seeds about and the rest of it) so label in pot and one stuck to outside of pot / tray (small label helps here) and I have one of those hand held things - not much of a memory and it's a pain to type on it, plus the tape stuff costs and its just a waste, four or five of these to a big full blooded rah de rah x rah de doo one. Plants are different but I might need a few of some when it comes to growing them on! I want to be doing that rather than typing big labels.

The rest is a excel job with eg column a s1 column b open pollenated Chris Crow, etc, etc, cost, number, sown date, everything I have, Usbs back that up. It's only really dates and price info etc that I do not remember / care for most is just in case, types I know what each is in the poly by now anyway, to excited! There are some oreos I can not wait to see and a flava cross I have pictured in my head a million different ways plus we have a spot where the green monsters are sleeping :)

Any sign of movement yet Dean?? I have four boxes of Sarras springing to life. Most of the Sarra plants are sending up flower stalks. I also have a lot of tiny Drosera seedlings coming on (they really are the most picturesque little plants), incredibly graceful and very deadly.

Keith those Drosera seedlings have kicked me up the backside, they look great and you must be well pleased with them :) Thanks for posting them, I have a few different capensis types to sow so I will get those going after seeing those and feeling some sun yesterday.

Speaking of which...   we have some showing! Nothing moving yesterday morning but put the covers down about 8pm and loads had cracked and you could see the root heading into the peat, this morning saw the first with two seed leaves showing! This is the first here so it has been marked lol and will be kept whatever it looks like but it is one from Chris Crows open pollenated seeds so could be anything. Just totally buzzing with that, been waiting a while for some to say hello and look forward to seeing what develops, will take a photo over the weekend.

Plant wise with the Sarracinias there is around 50 of them about the place now, have a couple of dozen on the window sills mainly from Mike that turned up in the snow and they looked further ahead then the residents of my poly so have been indoors since late Feb. Because of this the first flowers have been shown a paint brush and the first traps are open. The poly is also waking up and also has a few flowers and traps showing, VFTs awake as well so we have a lot to look forward too :)

Took a couple of photos this eve and gave them another good drink, not to much to show at the moment but all is well.

Got caught out on the first day of warm weather and have got some circles of white stuff, I am leaving the covers off now during the day and for the night I do use them but with many more holes ripped in the plastic! The growth of whatever kind has receded and the moss is growing back through so whatever it is it is in decline and also seeds germinating in affected areas do not seem to mind it. As I am not expert on white stuff growing in peat moss I cannot presume it is fatal and am reluctant to remove it at this stage for those reasons plus the number of seeds in affected areas are so small so impact is low but none the less I would like those plants if they want to live so I do not see the point of removal at this stage, plus I want to observe it. It will influence the planned poly refurb and greater areas of venting now feature in the design :)

First ever marked by the stick, it's a bit farm yard here. Then we have a sample pot from one further ahead and a sample tray from one further behind, in reality there is not much difference at this stage, germination rates are good and most seeds have cracked now and are in the process of shaking that seed casing off. Poly tunnel issues aside - that's already in process, the immediate thoughts are next year experiment with light levels versus moss growth and how beneficial that is or not for seedling growth and peat moss prep, this sinks quick lol and whilst I got most of the lumps sorted on top it doesn't look like that now and I will spend more time on that, I've been lucky with where they have found themselves but I can make that better next time.

Will update when we some difference in the seedlings, happy growing :)large.5ad8f783e4f53_circleofwhitestuff.jpg.254b4dae4ad96a72d332a2e9d27361f7.jpglarge.5ad8f785b170d_itsbythestick.jpg.449a4023df6fd094cb2598772aeb7223.jpglarge.5ad8f7877892d_samplepot.jpg.a010ca2e09f4a84f0a9e5f0cfccc3f8b.jpglarge.5ad8f78d99401_sampletray.jpg.7bcdce489c686eb3a278239a79c76f13.jpg
