Blocky71
I collected some seed from various vft's whilst I was cleaning them up before their hibernation and sowed them on some moist sphagnum to see if they would germinate indoors over winter whilst nothing else was growing. I covered the pot with cling film and then waited.......

Blocky71
So the seedlings seemed to have done about as well as could be expected growing on plain sphagnum and the day had come to attempt the timely task of potting on...... http://s985.photobucket.com/user/breeze1971/media/IMG_2023_zpsj2mulvei.jpg.html] I prepared some seed trays , got my tweezers and set to work.... http://s985.photobucket.com/user/breeze1971/media/IMG_2022_zpsro9iwew4.jpg.html] This was a mixed bunch of seeds as a trial, interesting to see the adult colouring/characteristics on some at such a young age.... http://s985.photobucket.com/user/breeze1971/media/IMG_2021_zpsjpdgmbyn.jpg.html] I've ended up with approx 320 little vft's, I lost the roots on some whilst pricking them out and this will have obviously caused some stress so not expecting a 100% success rate but I'll post back here in a couple of weeks with an update..... http://s985.photobucket.com/user/breeze1971/media/IMG_2024_zpsru69viua.jpg.html] http://s985.photobucket.com/user/breeze1971/media/IMG_2020_zpsdqbnvypt.jpg.html] Edited April 11, 2017 by Blocky71 Addition
ada
peat or an alternative?
Blocky71
I was using the term ' trial ' loosely Ada, I was pretty certain the seeds would germinate on anything moist, I just wanted to see if they'd germinate during winter and survive for any length of time on sphagnum which happily they did. Sphagnum is just less hassle than peat in the seed stage as in no weeds, moss or mould... I've planted them on into good old microwaved peat and perlite. A while back I germinated some vft's seeds on fish tank filter wool, the seeds germinated fine but all died within days of sprouting?. Unfortunately I can tell only of the results not the reasons..... Edited April 10, 2017 by Blocky71 Addition
Blocky71
Chucked in some Leah Wilkerson x lightly veined giant seeds to see how they do http://s985.photobucket.com/user/breeze1971/media/IMG_2025_zps2tcg7euv.jpg.html]
Blocky71
So the sarra seed just chucked on wet sphagnum did very nicely too, it will def be my propagating technique from now on. Here's how they looked last week before potting on. This time I just placed the whole clump , including sphagnum into a pot filled with peat. A week on and they look fine, will post a pic up of the vft's and the sarras and how they're doing presently..... http://s985.photobucket.com/user/breeze1971/media/me/Goldie eymae/DSC_0335_zps5ovi0idi.jpg.html] http://s985.photobucket.com/user/breeze1971/media/me/Goldie eymae/DSC_0336_zpsq2blsbye.jpg.html]
