A winter window ledge trial

13 posts in this topic

I collected some seed from various vft's whilst I was cleaning them up before their hibernation and sowed them on some moist sphagnum to see if they would germinate indoors over winter whilst nothing else was growing.

I covered the pot with cling film and then waited.......

At least there's plenty there, you can afford to be choosy about the best ones to grow on.

So the seedlings seemed to have done about as well as could be expected growing on plain sphagnum and the day had come to attempt the timely task of potting on......

I prepared some seed trays , got my tweezers and set to work....

This was a mixed bunch of seeds as a trial, interesting to see the adult colouring/characteristics on some at such a young age....

I've ended up with approx 320 little vft's, I lost the roots on some whilst pricking them out and this will have obviously caused some stress so not expecting a 100% success rate but I'll post back here in a couple of weeks with an update.....

I was using the term ' trial ' loosely Ada, I was pretty certain the seeds would germinate on anything moist, I just wanted to see if they'd germinate during winter and survive for any length of time on sphagnum which happily they did.

Sphagnum is just less hassle than peat in the seed stage as in no weeds, moss or mould... I've planted them on into good old microwaved peat and perlite.

A while back I germinated some vft's seeds on fish tank filter wool, the seeds germinated fine but all died within days of sprouting?. Unfortunately I can tell only of the results not the reasons.....
